I bought this as a gift for a friend so I didn’t really get a good look inside because I didn’t want to remove it from its cellophane wrap; however, what I can say is that it is a large book, not like some other art compilation books I’ve bought where they’re quite skinny and have hardly any images in them.

Based on what my friend who received the book said and the images she sent me, the art inside looks absolutely beautiful and the colours appear vivid and glossy.

I feel like I’m safe in saying the book appears to be a nice, chunky and high-quality collection of art works, and I’ll definitely be picking up a copy for myself as soon as I’m able!

Here we go again, another beautiful FFXIV art book. Firstly, thank goodness you can buy this from Amazon instead of the janky, Square Enix store which adds ‘next-day’ DPD delivery for £6 or something.

By now, you know the drill and like me – probably own all the other art books. After releasing the fantastic ‘Art of Eorzea’ covering the base game, Square Enix has then realised two art books per expansion, the first covering the base game and first patch, the second covering the subsequent patches leading up to the next full expansion.

To clarify, this is the 6th book in the series and covers the original release of Shadowbringers and patch 5:1 – notably including the Eden Gate raids.

As usual, it weighs in at around 300 pages, including lush, full page character, location, equipment art and more, making for an impressive package. The book dust jacket in particular, is lovely and slightly reflective.

That said…I can’t help feeling a slight tinge of disappointment when compared to some of the others. Maybe its because patch 5:2 has been out for so long that its strange not to see art from this patch (again, a global pandemic is a good excuse), also I would have loved to see more artist commentary. While there is a double page at the back with a small snippet from most of the design team, there’s almost nothing else which seems a shame as its always very interesting to read the thought process behind designing boss stages, dungeons and so forth.

Maybe its because Shadowbringers was such an impressive, colourful expansion, with great characters that having just a single page on Emet-Selch feels underwhelming (I bet there are some great character doodles somewhere).

Again, look this is a 5 star art book, great for fans of FFXIV and RPG game design. But it feels like with each new art book, the number or art pieces gets slightllllly less (compare it to the first Heavensward and Stormblood art for example).

Anyway, look, another lovely art book, NFC and all that – I guess we will just keep buying them as you do!

PS – we do get 6 pages of naked Hrothgar models to show off the different body types and tattoos, and not a single page on the Viera (just a double page of face portraits, don’t say Yoshi-P doesn’t have a sense of humour).

Love this book and the intestine look into the creation of the game, I’d recommend to anyone morbidly interested in a closer look at the processes used in the creation of FF14 shadowbringers

Absolute treat for fans of the series, the game itself or simply people who love the ideas of concept art and what it can showcase. High quality product, didn’t feel in anyway rushed or cheap.

    Can’t recommend it enough
