First Lady: An unputdownable thriller of politics and power

£8.50£9.50 (-11%)

Michael Dobbs, author of the No. 1 bestseller that inspired the hit Netflix series House of Cards, returns to the subject that made him a household name – the human drama and scandal in Westminster. First Lady is a compelling and witty novel of power, seduction and revenge, perfect for fans of John Grisham and Philip Kerr.

Virginia Edge: mid-thirties, attractive, self-sufficient, ambitious.

This is the story of her transformation from dutiful political wife to masterful manipulator of the entire political process at Westminster. She is a woman who is driven by the failings of men and the greed of others to take over their system and undermine it, to repay them in kind.

In this battle she has two great allies – the intuition and determination of a wronged wife, and the blind ineptitude of Westminster men.

Praise for Michael Dobbs:

‘Brilliant… Full of magnificently dark political characters’ Daily Mail

‘It’s barbed and breakneck, often very funny and hugely entertaining’ The Times

‘Here is a political thriller writer with a marvellous inside track knowledge of government’ Daily Express

Although enjoyable this book lacked teeth. Dobbs is famous, of course, for House of Cards and the ruthless protagonist. But here the First Lady lacks that killer instinct. She’s resilient, tough and towards the end uncompromising but one felt that such a character needed a little more brio. Dobbs is tremendous with his Westminster insights. He’s great with dialogue and story telling and this is an enjoyable read. Picked it up in a local giveaway shop a long time after its publication;so perhaps it’s a bit dated.

Love these books right up there with Archer. Buying the Churchhill one now :-). He makes all this politics stuff actually believable.

I want to read this but was waiting for the Kindle Edition which has been promised for some time. Now Amazon is saying Pre-order for December 2030. How is this possible given the physical book has been published since 2007? Either a Kindle edition is coming or it isn’t?

I thought,by the title it would be about American politics but in fact it was about English. Although a book of fiction it seemed true to life and everything that happened was feasible. I really enjoyed it

I’m a big fan of MD, but this was the first of his books that I’ve found all too easy to put down. I agree with the reviewers describing it as lacking teeth and bite. Also, a bit implausible in parts. Sadly, a tired, plodding effort.
