Online answers as well as a selection of free supporting downloads are available from the Schofield & Sims website.
First Mental Arithmetic provides rich and varied practice to develop pupils’ essential maths skills at Key Stage 1 and prepare them for all aspects of the national tests.
Structured according to ability rather than age, the series allows children to work at their own pace, building confidence and fluency. Two Entry Tests are available in the First Mental Arithmetic Teacher’s Guide and on the Schofield & Sims website, enabling teachers, parents and tutors to select the appropriate book for each child.
First Mental Arithmetic 2 is aimed at pupils in Year 1 and covers the key subject areas of number, measurement and geometry, including addition, subtraction, telling the time, 3-D shapes, number bonds and word problems. The book includes:
- 11 double-spread sessions, each presented in a unique three-part format comprising: questions using pictures or simplified language; questions using relevant mathematical vocabulary and symbols; word problems or questions that test understanding of mathematical concepts
- regular Check-up Tests to identify gaps in understanding
- a Language of Maths glossary at the start of each book to help develop children’s number vocabulary.
A separate accompanying answer book, First Mental Arithmetic 2 Answers (ISBN 9780721711706), contains answers to all the questions, making marking simple.

Good product thanks

My 6yo completed this book over half term. Was useful for him and helped build his confidence reading instructions. Each paper is repetition so they get used to the format and maths as they go through.

I bought Book 2 for my daughter in Reception and she zoomed through it!
I dropped a star due to errors in the book such as:
“Who is the taller?”
This was for a height question. Should be who is taller or who is the tallest?
May be just me being picky!

I bought this book for my 5 year old daughter along with book 1 as she was struggling at school. It’s in line with what she is learning at school. We worked through a paper every day Monday through Thursday and both her confidence and ability have improved so much that her teacher asked me what we have been doing. She hated maths but now loves it and is happily working through book 3!

My 4 years old child loves these books, already donde the first 2 in no time. Easy for young children that can’t read yet. Totally recommended to start ahead of school schedules.
