First Mental Arithmetic provides rich and varied practice to develop pupils’ essential maths skills at Key Stage 1 and prepare them for all aspects of the national tests.
Structured according to ability rather than age, the series allows children to work at their own pace, building confidence and fluency. Two Entry Tests are available in the First Mental Arithmetic Teacher’s Guide and on the Schofield & Sims website, enabling teachers, parents and tutors to select the appropriate book for each child.
First Mental Arithmetic 4 is aimed at pupils in Year 2 and covers the key subject areas of number, measurement, geometry and statistics, including multiplication, division, partitioning, fractions, number sequences, list, tables and reading scales. The book includes:
- 30 single-page sessions, each presented in a unique three-part format comprising: questions using pictures or simplified language; questions using relevant mathematical vocabulary and symbols; word problems or questions that test understanding of mathematical concepts
- regular Check-up Tests to identify gaps in understanding
- Just Facts questions to help secure knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts
- a Language of Maths glossary at the start of each book to help develop children’s number vocabulary
- three Achievement Charts to enable children to monitor their own progress.
A separate accompanying answer book, First Mental Arithmetic 4 Answers (ISBN 9780721711720) contains answers to all the questions, making marking simple.

Schofield & Sims First Mental Arithmetic 4 is a pretty good maths review book. It is aiming at Year 2 children. The no nonsense questions are easy to follow. I used each exercises as everyday quick tests for my 6 year old. He loved the challenge of getting the questions correct. Very good book.
FYI: Parents need to work out the answers themselves. The workbook doesn’t come with any FREE answer/ solution. There is an answer book available to buy individually at £4.95 at Schofield & Sims’ website. Personally, I think the answers should be made available to parents free either at the back of the book or from free download. I didn’t buy the answer book.

Having a private tutor that teaches my kids along with our home learning, the tutor follows the curriculum so their opinion is always great, was suggested these books by tutor and also my sister (teacher) and all my kids have really improved with this range of books. Always better to have something practical for learning then iPads and Phones of course. Aiming to get the kids into a good grammar and I have had good comments home from their teachers already on their improvements at school.
The questions and guides are good, nice selection of topics and very practical and easy to follow even for parents. Not much to say bad about the books, arrived in no time and will continue to purchase as the kids go through the levels.

My son isn’t normally too keen on using books to aid his learning, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that he actually enjoyed this one. It was split into small sections so you can complete as much or as little as you like. A great starter as well as revision aid for those practising their numbers.

This fourth book in the series sharply increases the quantity of work in each exercise, as compared to the first three books in the series. This booker is heavier in content, but is similar in concept the earlier books in the series: re-iteration of problems, etc.
My kid’s mathematics skills have definitely improved due to her continued work on the first four books in the series, and I hope the remaining two books would similarly help.
