First Mental Arithmetic provides rich and varied practice to develop pupils’ essential maths skills at Key Stage 1 and prepare them for all aspects of the national tests.
Structured according to ability rather than age, the series allows children to work at their own pace, building confidence and fluency. Two Entry Tests are available in the First Mental Arithmetic Teacher’s Guide and on the Schofield & Sims website, enabling teachers, parents and tutors to select the appropriate book for each child.
First Mental Arithmetic 5 is aimed at pupils in Year 2 and covers the key subject areas of number, measurement, geometry and statistics, including multiplication, division, partitioning, fractions, block graphs, missing number sequences and telling the time to five minutes. The book includes:
- 30 single-page sessions, each presented in a unique three-part format comprising: questions using pictures or simplified language; questions using relevant mathematical vocabulary and symbols; word problems or questions that test understanding of mathematical concepts
- regular Check-up Tests to identify gaps in understanding
- Just Facts questions to help secure knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts
- a Language of Maths glossary at the start of each book to help develop children’s number vocabulary
- three Achievement Charts to enable children to monitor their own progress.
A separate accompanying answer book, First Mental Arithmetic 5 Answers (ISBN 9780721711737) contains answers to all the questions, making marking simple.

i bought for this for my son who has been preparing for his 11 plus exams. as you may know the questions bit difficult and higher than the normal curriculum from schools. if you have a excercise book, you must have this answer book as well, unless you are quick and accurate in calculating. was a good choice.

I found this book very useful. helps with daily support for my child. in the absence of having a tutor; this book has helped with revising what has been taught at school. its in bit size chunk and my daughter enjoys using it too.

A bit too easy and repetitive

Schofield & Sims First Mental Arithmetic 5 is a pretty good maths review book. It is aiming at Year 2 children. The no nonsense questions are easy to follow. I used each exercises as everyday quick tests for my 6 year old. He loved the challenge of getting the questions correct. Very good book.
FYI: Parents need to work out the answers themselves. The workbook doesn’t come with any FREE answer/ solution, but there is an answer book available to purchase at RSP £4.95 at Schofield & Sims’ website. Personally, I think the answers should be available free of charge or free download for parents. I didn’t buy the answer book.
