One of the best book i have found. Its got alot of good stuff and 6 year old loves doing them. You go through the lessons and then there is Test at the end to test them. I have found, questions repeat on the same page but asked differently, and after doing couple they can use the answers from other questions to relate them to new questions which is good in my opinion.

Schofield & Sims First Mental Arithmetic 6 is a pretty good maths review book. It is aiming at Year 2 children. The no nonsense questions are easy to follow. I used each exercises as everyday quick tests for my 6 year old. He loved the challenge of getting the questions correct. Very good book.
FYI: Parents need to work out the answers themselves. The workbook doesn’t come with any FREE answer/ solution. There is an answer book available to buy individually at £4.95 at Schofield & Sims’ website. Personally, I think the answers should be made available to parents free of charge either at the back of the book or from free download. I didn’t buy the answer book.

i bought for this for my son who has been preparing for his 11 plus exams. as you may already know that the questions bit difficult and higher than the normal curriculums in schools. if you have an excercise book, you must have this answer book as well, unless you are quick and accurate in calculating. one thing regretful is that there is no explanation of it. just answers inside. bit expensive when no explanation was available. it was exactly a copy of the excersise book with answers. But over all, was a good choice.

My son (8) gets very little homework and needs to practice his mental arithmetic. My husband is a maths teacher and these are the best we have come accross – there are no stories or ‘singing and dancing’ stickers just sums, lots of them, and a progress chart at the end of each section. We do a page a day (and there are no answers at the back so it’s good for me too) this is the second book he has worked through, and his mental maths is definitely improving!! My daughter has used the later books too. The only problem with them is that i need a calculator to check the answers quickly!
