A very good resource for brushing up practical English skills before concentrating on targeted test preparation from the individual exam board for your Functional Skills test in English at Level 1. This is also a really practical and useful way of improving your skills in everyday English reading and writing, if you want to study at home, or perhaps to support an external course.
Cutbacks to adult education budgets over the past few years mean that many of the evening classes that adults could attend to improve their English and Maths no longer exist, making books like this even more valuable.
Level 1 Functional Skills English is the level that is essential for most jobs. A qualification at Level 1 is equivalent to D-G at the old GCSE levels, approximately 4-1 at the new 9-1 skills levels.
This book doesn’t have quite everything in it that is needed for total test preparation, based on the latest tests that I have used from City and Guilds, but it is still by far the best resource that there is for the Functional Skills Level 1 English tests.
I am a Functional Skills tutor for English and Maths and have used the CGP books extensively for some years. I have recommended them particularly for work-based learning, to support home study and as an alternative means of support for e-learning.
For anyone who is not confident about their skills in writing letters and emails,in the workplace or home, or who finds that they seem to take longer to read and absorb written information of any type, these books are a great way to gain those skills. Poor English skills can hold you back at work, not being able to fully absorb the contents of a letter or notice can have far-reaching consequences.
The exercises used throughout are practical, realistic and sensible, and bear relevance to real adult lives. The learning explanations are clear and unambiguous and focus on what is really important for each topic.
Previously I have always given CGP Functional Skills books five stars, but not this one.
The book bears the logo. ‘New! for assessment in 2016 and beyond’, and ‘For all exam boards including City and Guilds and Pearson-Edexcel’ which led me to expect significant changes from the previous editions.
The page layout has varied slightly, with different typefaces and layouts used. However, the actual learning content of this edition, marked 2015, has not changed at all, that I could identify. This based on a comparison with the previous (2012) edition that I have used for the past few years.
For a book of this type it is possibly not realistic to tailor the content to each individual exam board.
However the 2015 and 2016 changes to City and Guilds Functional Skills English tests in particular, mean that the content of the book does need further updating, in my opinion.
The brief test-type tasks for reading and writing used within the book are too brief in most cases. They are useful and the content is good, but they are not to the same standards as the current test questions. Standards have risen and the bar is now higher than it was a few years ago. It is certainly significantly higher than the old multiple choice Skills for Life tests; I taught these programmes so this is an informed view.
It is absolutely essential that anyone using these books for test preparation also accesses the practice tests for their particular exam board, is fully aware of the test requirements and particularly of the approach needed for success.
This is still a very, very good buy, definitely the best currently available. but do be aware of the above, so that the real tests don’t come as an unexpectedly challenging experience.
