Beyond its fundamental value as a great reference for contemporary best practice in the games industry, Game Audio Mixing shines where Alex Riviere has curated enormously helpful perspectives from peers in the industry – crucially, across a range of disciplines.
Game audio is such a vast field that it’s essential for every practitioner in one discipline to be aware of workflows in all the others, and as well as this book offering a broad but incisive spread of insights to such specialists, I think it should also be required reading for seniors and leads in all other departments! Too many development pipelines assume that audio should tread water until all other assets are in place, then be bullied into passing an entire game at the last minute: to be able to recommend a concise and readable book as an explanation for why this should never be the case, is invaluable.
Perhaps most importantly, especially for newcomers to the industry or to ambitious self-starters, all of the advice from Alex and his contributors is presented in such a way that it scales cleanly from single-person audio departments in small or medium indie studios, right up to fully-staffed triple A teams.
Vital!
