Wish I’d been able to read this book before getting my dog, along with the likes of Susan Garett and Modern Malinios.
It’s easy to think when you get a puppy you will only be kind and patient and use positive reinforcement, until it does not work!
My puppy showed me 0 affection or interest in me for the first 3-6 months of having her. The best I got was a scratch in the face. She seemed to like everyone else though, and dogs, she just wanted nothing to do with me, her sole owner. I was bending over backwards to please her in every way I could think of but all I got in return was disdain.
So then I got fed up and tried getting angry and no longer allowing her on the furniture. This worked great at first. I still would definitely recommend restricting access to the sofa because then you can offer it as a special reward. But getting angry in order to control her behaviour was becoming white noise to her, she was becoming increasingly unresponsive and I was having to get super angry to get through to her at all. It definitely was ruining our relationship.
Lucky for me I tried the sexier than a squirrel challenge (online challenge by the authors) out of desperation. It really helped. I now have a dog that, ok, shes very much not perfect, but even when she goes for stuff, she pretty quickly disengages and runs back to me, without me having to tell her anything!
Reading this book is a great starting point with tons of games that definitely does seem like the best training method I have come across. But, be warned, the Absolute Dogs people are after your soul. I am already paying £30 a month now for access to their online library of games and splash out additionally on courses. I do think it is worth it though. I bought this book as a gift originally but reading through it, I’m finding games I didn’t know about, I’m probably going to keep it for myself!

Another brilliant resource from Tom and Lauren. This book contains a wealth of information on puppy training basics as well as next level behaviour eg, walks socialisation, separation struggles etc. Also, lots of concept training, which is actually nothing like training – it is playing games to grow your puppy/dog’s skills to cope with the world around them and teach them to make the right choices. This really is life changing stuff. I have been concept training with absoluteDogs for about four years now and it has made such a difference to me and my dog. He loves the games, his eyes shine, his tail wags, he’s like a kid at Christmas. Honestly it sounds too good to be true but it really works and transfers to real life. I can recall him from cats/squirrels/other dogs and we have carried on walking calmly as a fox crossed our path only feet away (playing the game magic hand – explained in this book). He has good household manners, he will lie quietly on a boundary and does not stress when I leave the house. I have also helped my dog walking friends, one of whom could not get her dog to come back to put his lead on. Sometimes she’d be in the park for 2 hours – completely different picture now. He never strays far from her side (proximity training through games). It’s all in this book!

AbsoluteDogs is the gold standard, built on a foundation of science, trust, and fun!
This book is as phenomenal as I’d hoped. We are a household with a SEN child, a Labrador and a puppy Cavapoo. The training from aD is the fundamental reason I can take my 32kg Labrador and child out at the same time by myself. It was critically important Milo was sharp and well trained to make that happen and thanks to Tom & Lauren sharing their wisdom our dogs have an enriching life and our son is safe around them because instead of pulling us across roads they stick at my feet until verbally released, they stop mid-run instead of knocking him over, and they do not eat his food or steal his toys. I can’t thank them enough!
I preordered Game On Puppy the second it was up, arriving the week we got 2nd puppy, it’s my bible. Like Milo we began with STAS, and once GOP arrived we had even more exciting things to try, and answers to our endless questions right there in our hands. Within 2 days he nailed heel walking, middle, place, leave it w/ duration and sit/down/wait. On his first walk I let him off and his recall is near perfect! I only wish I had this book on Milo’s first week home, but even at 1yr old Milo is benefiting from the tricks in this
The proof is in the pudding. Buy this book and don’t look back, your dogs want to do good things and this book is the dog language dictionary to guide you to success
