Gaumont: British Cinemas
£26.50
From rundown halls to the sumptuous Gaumont Palaces and the huge Gaumont State at Kilburn, the Gaumont circuit had cinemas in most high streets. The name was lost after a merger with the Odeon circuit, but many former Gaumonts are still operating today. Others are now listed buildings put to different uses, such as the New Victoria (an Apollo theatre) and the Troxy Stepney (a bingo hall). This text describes the often turbulent history of the Gaumont cinemas, their methods of operation and the work of their chief architect, W.E. Trent. It includes data on all 400 Gaumont buildings, titles of films given a release in the circuit and numerous illustrations of cinemas and advertising.

A treat for lovers of internal and external cinema architecture of two well known cinema chains- Gaumont and Odeon. Well documented explaining the history of Gaumont British and its acquisition by Rank etc.
in particular, I had been recommended this book for a particular photograph- The Majestic Leeds. I wanted a photo of its curtained screenbox which had been installed for 70mm productions in the late 1950’s.
This book did not fail to meet my requirements. So pleased to have obtained this used copy (it now being out of print and in such fine condition.
The coverage of this nationwide chain is extensive. I would recommend an enthusiast check to see if there are further copies available.
Their favourite cinema might well be covered!
