The Cold War is a fascinating but complex area of History and students need to be well prepared before sitting their GCSE in History. CGP Books have produced another important guide that will help children learn and retain the vital aspects of this part of the syllabus. The guide begins with a general introduction for how to approach the exam and the skills required to attain a high mark.
After that, there are specific chapters covering the Origins, Development and Transformation of the Cold War. Each section is visually appealing; they are clearly written using colour coding, highlighting and underlining to let the important details stand out. The pages look similar to a set of high quality hand written notes rather than page after page of dry academic facts and dates. There are opportunities then to test that knowledge by means of short exercises. Each chapter ends with a longer exam style question giving valuable practice of essay writing. There is a detailed answers section at the back so students can see how they have fared and discover what needs further attention.
The guide also has a code inside it which allows you to get a free online version of the book, so it can be studied on a computer too. Whether it is The Berlin Wall, The Cuban Missile Crisis or The Prague Spring that needs revising, this guide will give your child more confidence in getting a high grade.

This CGP AQA 9-1 GCSE History – Conflict and Tension Between East and West (1945-1972) This title considers revolutionary activities during this of the 20th century. Its emphases are on the causes and critical points of the Cold War. It seeks to show how and why conflict occurred. Also, why it proved problematic to resolve the tensions which arose during the Cold War. It helps the student to zero in, also, on the role of key individuals and groups in shaping change and how they were affected by and influenced international relations. I believe that these CGP pedagogical aids are rather well done, nonetheless they are no substitute for course notes and other assigned texts.
Returning to the text at hand, the period of history under consideration starts from the end of the Second World War: Yalta and Potsdam Conferences; the division of Germany; contrasting attitudes and ideologies of the USA and the USSR. This is including the aims of Stalin, Churchill, Roosevelt, Attlee and Truman; the effect of the dropping of the atom bomb on post-war superpower relations. Finally, the text deals with the easing of tension: the sources of tension, including the Soviets’ record on human rights; the reasons for Détente and SALT 1 talks; the part played by key individuals Brezhnev and Nixon. There is also plenty of exam guidance and exercise questions. The colouring is fair to OK, as I find it can make the page somewhat overly busy. All in all, a good text, which delivers.

This is the CGP GCSE history topic guide which contains essential revision and practice questions. The book is quite slim, with about 40 pages for revisions notes, 10 pages of worked exam questions and 20 pages of close typed answers (so it’s packed full). The information is presented clearly, utilising colour and bullet-pointing well.
It also includes a free online edition which you access by typing in the code found on the inside front cover- each code only works once, so it’s a bit of a shame if someone steals your code.

Product arrived in good condition, consists of a thick 76 page A4 book with semi hard cardboard cover. This covers the new syllabus for all grades 1-9.
The book is split into the 3 sections that are covered in the Conflict and Tension Between East and West, 1945-1972. In addition to these, a the beginning of the book there is a section on Exam Skills and at the end are the answers. Each topic is easily located with clear headings. Different areas are laid out in boxes containing clearly written explanations, with the important words underlined. At the end of each section you’ll find Exam Style Questions to work though. There are also Exam Tips throughout the book.
This is an extremely easy to use Revision & Practice guide. It can also help support the student during term times as well, particularly if they have tests. I would recommend this book to anyone studying AQA GCSE History.

This is a very helpful preparation tool. It’s layout is modern – lots of colour, pictures, headings and snappy bites of pertinent information which then lead to another page of Q&A to test what one may have learned from the preceding page. There’s also a good amount of information on ‘how’ to set out one’s answers in the exam and also ‘what’ to include in the answers. All-in-all this book is well produced in that it has taken a large subject, broken it down into manageable portions and keeps you on track as you ‘study’.
The book is also very useful for people like myself who, although not preparing for the exam, want to learn about the history that it covers but either do not have the time, or the inclination, to wade through much larger and lengthier books – this little book has obviously been put together by knowledgeable people who have done a lot of the hard work of wading through masses of information to bring things into a succinct and attractive package which makes the ‘learning’ a pleasurable exercise.

A helpful book for a student who struggles to organise their revision.
