Teaching languages is a complex business. While this book has a good overview of various themes, especially grammar, I find it too wordy and too English. Therefore, it is difficult to access. Especially for conjugation of verbs, comparing the tenses in German to English, it lacks clarity and simplicity. It might help people to get an overview, but having been confronted with SPAG (spelling, punctuation and grammar) in both languages, I don’t find all that helpful.

I’ve not dived into this book yet – but it looks comprehensive – use at reference. And a CD – bonus!

Down to earth English language used in the book. It’s a good book overall, which includes a useful CD to hear German pronunciation. The book is a bit on the expensive side for some people to consider.

Got this book as a complete beginner, only knowing the phrase guten tag, and can now honestly say that my German has extended because of this book.
Granted, this book will not make you fluent (you will be hard struck to find one that does!) but what it can teach you is, in the first chapter, a solid foundation that is built upon throughout the book.
What I really liked about the book is the way that it presnted you examples of convosations in German related to what you have been reading about (eg questions, like how are you). I found this really helpful as it provided me with ways that I could extend the convosation if I were in the situation.
Haven’t tried the CD yet so can’t give any advice on that I’m afraid! However, my friend has the same book and CD and told me that it really helps with pronunciation and fluency!
Overall, fantastic book and a 100% reccomend

I was going through vocabulary list and found an error in the first chapters: Spiegel translated as a faucet, whereas of course translation is a mirror. This undermined my confidence in the book and i returned it.

I bought this book as I am doing conversational German in night school and they had not recommended any text books. I looked around Amazon and Waterstones and having used Dummies books in the past I plumped for this. My reasons were purely economical; I did not want to spend vast sums of money and I wanted a lot of bangs for my buck and this has 5 books in one. I think this has got it pretty much covered and it has most of what I need; meeting and greeting, numbers, shopping, buying stuff asking for directions and telling someone a little about you and your family and a whole lot more. I am not sure that I need all that this book contains. 5 in 1 makes it a very large book and you really need to think about that; it’s difficult to read in bed as it is heavy and you need to think twice about packing it In your rucksack to read on the train. That said, if you plan to study German and you want a bargain look no further than this book.

To begin with, I would like to state that I bought this book with zero expectations: the fact that it were titled “German for Dummies” did not much confidence. How wrong I were. Very wrong, indeed.
As the title suggests, it is actually 5 books all in one. Extremely modular with everything from basic things like numbers to more fun subjects like grammar etc. It is really to go backwards and forwards in the book as much of the topics are self contained.
The language used in the book is really to understand – as it should be as the book is written in, more or less, plain English.
Highly recommend and I would buy it again.

Excellent introduction to the German language. Complete beginners will find the layout and text easy to follow and enjoy. Anyone with a working knowledge, or better, can also learn some interesting and useful tips while improving their language skills. However, as with learning any new skill, it does take commitment and a willingness to put the work in. With its lessons, text and helpful comments this book helps by engaging the reader while giving instruction. I would recommend this book highly. The physical book includes CDs. No problems there. Downloading the sound files that accompany the eBook version was rather time consuming. Just finding them was difficult. I’m still having problems getting them on to my iPad, but they could be of my own making !
