Kissen’s family were killed by zealots of a fire god. Now, she makes a living killing gods, and enjoys it. That is until she finds a god she cannot kill: Skedi, a god of white lies, has somehow bound himself to a young noble, and they are both on the run from unknown assassins.

Joined by a disillusioned knight on a secret quest, they must travel to the ruined city of Blenraden, where the last of the wild gods reside, to each beg a favour.

I completely and utterly fell in love with Godkiller. I should have known, really, considering as it’s a book about a world inhabited by hundreds of gods, a god-war and a main character who hunts them down for work. Some of my favourite things to read about and reading Godkiller reminded me that I really need to dig into more books with this kind of subject as the plot!

Hannah Kaner has created a rich and varied world where gods used to rule, not just huge, omnipresent gods, but gods of broken sandals and other small things. If an offering can be placed a god can be created. Add in the city of Blenraden, where gods still live and where the war was fought and it just captivated me. From the first mention of Blenraden I knew I’d spend the whole book looking forward to seeing this ruined city and the gods that still reside there. And I was not disappointed.

I also loved our trio of characters. They may not all see eye to eye at the start but I loved watching their friendships grow and change through their journey. They all have different perspectives on the world and they all have their own views on the gods. They made for such a wonderful ragtag group and following their journey was just wonderful.

I’m so, so happy that Godkiller is the first in a series. I really want to explore more of the world and Hannah’s writing.

Great book. I would definitely recommend it to readers who enjoy YA fantasy on the older age range. Can’t wait to read the next one!

The startling artwork was what first drew me to this book. I was hooked after the opening line, ‘Her father fell in love with a God of the sea’. Godkiller is the story of Kissen, a Godkiller; Inara, who has a shrineless God tethered to her; & Elogast, a former knight. Their stories start separately but they eventually meet. Kissen is embittered about the Gods, because of something that happened in her youth and is now hired as a Godkiller. Gods in this world can be generated from people’s will & desires. Some Gods are very old but new ones are created all the time. The trouble is that the more powerful they become, the greedier they are for ever bigger sacrifices. The land they live in is scarred by a previous battle between Gods & humans (a story ripe for a prequel). Inara is a young girl, in need of Kissen’s help. I don’t want to give too much plot away here. I think this is one of the best books I’ve read in a while. There is something extremely elegant and mature about Hannah’s writing style. I can’t quite put my finger on what, but it’s as if she has found the most perfect, eloquent words to use. Her descriptions are amazing but not over wordy. The idea of Gods being generated by human desire isn’t new, Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman both hint at this idea, but the Gods in this world are beautifully crafted and believable. I would love to see an illustrated book just about the different Gods, using this incredible artwork. There’s already a small pantheon of Gods mentioned in this book. Indeed, I think the Gods that she has created are my favourite part of the book. The characters are rich, each with their own flaws & grey areas. These are no squeaky clean superheroes. The book has been left wide-open for a sequel and I for one will be buying it. Hannah Kaner has found a new fan. A stunning debut.

Those last 50 pages!! Incredible, loved it, need the next one immediately.

I love a good quest and this delivered. Kissen, Inara and Elogast are fantastic characters and I enjoyed each of their POV’S, I was excited for each one, and that doesn’t always happen with 2+ characters.

The twists and turns I did not see coming at all, I blasted through this in a couple of days, little slow to start, but I was hooked in no time.

A little slow to grab me but once it did I ate it up…looking forward to the sequel.

YA is not normally my cup of tea but I thoroughly enjoyed Godkiller and was gripped from the prologue chapter.

I loved the world building, different magical system, the presence of different types of Gods, the interlinked themes of different faiths and how the interactions with the various gods can seriously influence peoples ability to coincide with others – much like societies today. I enjoyed how the FMC works through her own beliefs and how this guides her decision making throughout the stories progression.

Definitely worth the hype on Booktok!
