Gordon Ramsay Desserts
£4.40
Desserts have a reputation for being difficult, and chef’s desserts in particular might be expected to be flashy and complicated. Not so Gordon’s. His methods are classical, because these are what work and have stood the test of time, but wherever it’s possible to make a recipe simpler, Gordon will do so. What matters are the flavours, and noone is better at combining them – pineapple and star anise, figs with balsamic syrup, raspberry and lemongrass, chocolate and thyme – to name but a few. In Just Desserts the first few chapters deal with the basic building blocks – fruit, ices and creams, mousses and souffles. The recipes are presented in a clear and easy-to-follow way; the mouthwatering photographs of finished desserts are backed up with revealing and informative step-by-step technique photographs. Each recipe stands alone but where it could be combined to make a more special dish there are suggestions in the margin – Slow Roasted Peaches with Orange Caramel Sauce would be served with White Peach Parfait and Dried Peach Slices, for example. Gordon loves classics but here each one has an individual twist – Summer Pudding, for instance, is made with brioche rather than bread and served in a spectacular stack; Treacle Tart is made with a superlight pastry and served with Lemongrass Creme Fraiche. Not only is Just Desserts a superb collection of delicious recipes for every occasion, it is the definitive book on superlative contemporary dessert making. Glamorous yet authoritative, it will be many years before a better book on the subject is produced.

Can’t find nothing special in this book . Just basic recipes . I do have quite a few pastry books and every single one of them is much better . From William and Suzue Curley , Roux brothers..etc …

I belong to the wrong demographic group to be entertained by Gordon Ramsay on television, but I acknowledge his mastery of method when it comes to tips and techniques with desserts and I look forward to drawing inspiration and confidence from his advice in this book.

This is the first book I own written by Gordon Ramsay. To be honest, although I enjoy watching Kitchen Nightmares USA, I don’t watch his other programmes. I find him quite irritating and manic but I came across this book on Amazon and after reading the reviews I decided to buy it. I haven’t tried any recipe yet but I have read the whole book (I love reading recipe books, that is one of my hobbies along with cooking!) but I am sure that I will have a lot of fun trying them out and delighting my guests and of course most of all myself, because I love not only cooking but also eating (quite a miracle that I am so slim…)!
I loved Gordon’s friendly tone and all the advice he gives, so very different from the image he projects on TV…. There are recipes for all tastes and most of them really very simple to make. Almost no recipe is complicated or asks for a lot of skills other than the one pictured on the cover, that one will take a bit of trial and error but I hope I will get it right as it looks fabulous! Lots of recipes contain fruit, so this is first and foremost maybe a book that will be useful from the Spring till the Autumn, but there also some recipes which contain no fruit. The photos are wonderful but not all recipes come with a photo. There is a good index, a glossary which will be useful especially for those who are new to cooking, an interesting chapter where you can find out which wines go better with which desserts, a chapter about kitchen equipment, one about ingredients where he tells you which ingredients he uses and why, a chapter about basics where you can find all kinds of pastries, recipes for meringues, etc, and lots of wonderful desserts from ice creams to sorbets, bavaroises, mousses, dried and roasted fruits, parfaits, soufflés, tarts, crumbles, puddings, profiteroles, etc. There is a very useful chapter about accompaniments and chocolates. All in all, although I would have never really looked for a cook book by Gordon Ramsay, he has really surprised me and I wouldn’t be surprised if this became one of my favourite books. As I try out the recipes I will post here some updates to let you know what I think about them.

Lovely book, clear explanations, good pictures, and achievable for the keen home cook. Gordon Ramsey’s books are always easy to follow.

As always Gordon’s books are invaluable and I thoroughly recommend it. A sensible comprehensive selection of desserts with out the need for several books as it also covers ice creams as well as classics and many other inspiring recipes with different flavours.
