Gordon’s Great Escape Southeast Asia: 100 of my favourite Southeast Asian recipes

£23.80

On the second leg of his Great Escapes series, Gordon Ramsay sets out to discover the flavours of Asia, on a remarkable journey that leads him through Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia and Vietnam. 100 new recipes are inspired by the tastes and experiences he encounters along the way.

In this book to accompany the TV series, stunning photography and Gordon’s inspirational travel stories combine to depict a richly-textured portrait of a continent. With breathtaking landscapes as his backdrop, Gordon is welcomed into local communities and shown the age-old traditions and secrets that underpin their native dishes. He meets characters with fascinating lives, shares delicious meals in beautiful surroundings, and is invited to take part in the customs and rituals of the land – venturing into paddy fields to observe the rice worship, accompanying huntsmen on their quest for frogs and honey, navigating the inky night-time ocean for moonlit fishing, and cooking up a feast in a colossal Malay temple.

Gordon has devised over 100 new recipes to showcase the very essence of these cultures and cuisines. There are unique tastes and styles from across the region, with a wealth of enticing ingredients: from tangy limes and the earthy scent of sesame oil, to floral jasmine and lush green banana leaves. Don’t let unfamiliar recipe names put you off – Tom Yam Goong Nam Khon is a divine hot and sour prawn soup, Ngah Poh Kai Fan a slow-cooked clay-pot chicken and Karipap the Malay answer to a Cornish pastie.

And there are recipes that even wary cooks will recognise – Chicken Satay, Pad Thai, Red and Green Curries – though look closer and each recipe has something extra, an authenticity that comes from taking the time to understand the origins of the dish. Gordon proves that the real thing is easy to replicate at home, whether its a single spice that makes all the difference, marinating a cut of meat for 12 unhurried hours, or being brave enough to try a key new ingredient such as kaffir lime leaves or lemongrass (readily available in supermarkets but often overlooked).

Let Gordon open your eyes with his vivid portrayal of a magnificent continent, and enjoy some of the very greatest Asian dishes in your own kitchen.

Love this book! This one was bought for my sister who also loves south East Asian cooking. The chicken satay is amazing.

Despite the series having received a lot of poor press, I really loved it, as it showed a humble and human side of Ramsay, bringing him to his knees in front of peasants.
The two books accompany each of the series, are beautifully presented, and filled with recipes which Ramsay has adapted. What I mean is that they are not Gordon Ramsay’s own recipes, but rather his adaptations of the traditional recipes which he acquired whilst on his travels. The books are both beautifully presented hardcover volumes, illustrated with photographs and stories, but also full of well presented recipes from the far east. Regardless of your views on the series, Gordon’s Great Escape books are fantastic value for money when it comes to recipe books, and the recipes presented seem to be of a rare and authentic nature.

What to say? Gordon’s recipes are made for family, cheap, easy, and those one are exactly the same way.

bought this book as i was looking for asian style dishes. i have tried many of the recipes from this book so far and i must say that i am not disappointed. all of the dishes that i have tried so far always left me wanting more, and i am definately going to continue cooking from this book and will go back to several of the dishes that i have tried so far.

the only downsides to this book are 1) the preparation time which can be rather long for some of the dishes (maybe this time can be reduced if you have a good food processor to do some of the chopping for you), and 2) the section on appetizers and soups is too long and i would have prefered to have more recipes for main dishes. this last point is only my own personal view though, as i am not a big fan of making appetizers and i don’t particularly like soups in general, so these sections are a bit wasted on me. but then again, they will probably be of great value to people who actually do like soups and appetizers, so it’s not really a flaw of the book per se.

i really like this book and am now looking into buying GR’s book on indian recipes too.

Only made one thing so far. Beef rendang is absolutely fantastic, I hope the other recipes are as good as this one and how they look the book. I’m pretty sure they will be looking at the ingredients. My only criticism would be the quality of the paper used.

A really good book I am so pleased to have bought it. No F words either. Can’t wait to try some more recipes, the ones that I have done so far have been excellent. A good sequel to Great Escapes. Well done Gordon and you had a great holiday out of it too.
