I’m a complete beginner on the guitar, though I can read music and play other instruments. There were good reviews of this book and I have no idea why. I’ve got to the end of day 3 so far and I find the book is very little help.

The timing is completely unrealistic. As he mentions, playing makes your fingers sore and he says you should stop and rest them so that you don’t get blisters. But he also says you should play for several hours a day. The two don’t go together. I can’t even manage half an hour a day in several sessions yet. Then you get to play Happy Birthday. Then he puts down some more melodies, which are not tunes. It would be far better to put recognisable tunes so that you could enjoy playing them and start to get a feel for the notes. The pictures of him playing chords aren’t helpful – with the A chord, for example, he has one finger on the fret and another so far down that (having tried in exactly the same placings) you cannot get a clear note. With the tabs, it would be much more helpful if he put the name of the note down, as well as the tab. I can look up to the stave and read it, but I’m getting no feel, after a week, for what note I’m playing at any time. There is simply not enough content at the early stages, he’s so intent on rushing through in seven lessons that he doesn’t give enough to practise simply with. My husband was guitarist in a professional band, back in the day, and he’s as unimpressed with the book as I am. He’s taught me rather more than the book has.
It’s good that the writer is encouraging and there are certainly some good tips. The tuning instructions are clear and so is the general information. Glancing forward, I can see that there is good advice – but I’ll certainly need another book to help me (not written by Guitar Head) if I’m to get that far. I’m sure there’s something better out there, I can’t recommend this book.

To tune up the guitar strings practically every time you get the guitar out to play a really needed item cannot be without one

I found this book to be a bit too advanced for an absolute beginner like myself but using this and an app I’ve found, I should be strumming away in no time ????????????

I’ve never played guitar before, but my granddaughter’s spare electric guitar was sitting there doing nothing. So I decided I would give it ago as I had always wanted to. The instructions and examples are easy to follow. I am now able to play some basic cords and read tab. This won’t turn you into Jimmy Hendrix over night, but you will be playing guitar, which is more than I was doing before. I have used the kindle version, and it’s a shame you can’t play the backing tracks through the app. So I downloaded separately onto my phone. I would totally recommend this to anyone who aspires to play guitar, just don’t expect miracles over night, just sore fingers.
Just a short update to my previous review. I’m now using a hard copy of the book for ease of use, as it was a bit of a pain using the app and playing the backing tracks. Plus it’s much easier to see what you need to be playing in the book rather that on a small screen using the app. P.S. I’ve been playing for an hour a day and I’ve improved greatly. Really enjoying playing and should have brought this book sooner.

Play your first song in 7 days ? In your dreams maybe !! Some good points to the book for sure BUT as a complete beginner, unless you have a natural talent which most won’t, you will NOT be playing in 7 days. First of all your fingers will be hurting so much, secondly it takes time to learn how to hold the guitar and pick, thirdly although it’s pretty easy to learn a new chord playing different chords quickly and fluently and in tune will not be achieved in 7 days. It takes time to quickly change chords, fourthly strumming takes time to learn. Also, a book is one thing but should be accompanied by a video presentation to play along with, learning visually about finger placement, pick holding, guitar holding etc, strumming and then playing along with. You really can’t beat visual learning. I’m sure the author is well intentioned but really don’t believe the hype. I did sign up for his paid monthly subscription but cancelled a few days later, it really isn’t, in my opinion, well prepared or detailed enough for beginners to warrant the cost. I was looking for video teachings centred around the book but it isn’t. Do a search for justinguitar.com for a much better, and free, video guitar courses.
