    by Dr Geoff Brent

As a senior Dermatology trainee, an issue I have regularly faced when accessing dermatology resources is that many of them have great detail on the clinical presentation, pathogenesis, and investigations, but the management section is sparse, or not practically useful in a clinical setting. Dr Jiyad and Professor Flohr’s Handbook of Skin Disease Management perfectly fills that void. It specifically targets the management of various common or important conditions. It is aimed at dermatology trainees and consultants, as well as GPs.

The handbook is very well organised, with the conditions arranged in alphabetical order so you can quickly flick through to find what you’re looking for. There are useful clinical pearls and summaries of key investigations. The management options are listed in stepwise order, with dosing and regimes, and include a brief summary of the evidence base. This is excellent for development of one’s own knowledge but also when discussing treatment options with patients. Finally there are numerous essential diagnostic lists and other helpful reminders in the appendix, such as from where exactly to take a biopsy for immunofluorescence for different conditions, and information on biologics and systemics, which are useful when you rapidly need to look something up in a busy clinic.

The book does assume some prior knowledge of the conditions and has no clinical images, as the focus is on management rather than diagnostics. I have found it invaluable in clinics and on ward rounds. Ultimately, The Handbook of Skin Disease Management is an excellent resource for clinicians managing dermatology patients, and I highly recommend it.
