A great read, as parent, teacher and for insights into my own mental life.
I like particularly that Dr Mosley weaves together all the recent research alongside her own experience as a parent, making Happy Families a coherent, engaging and accessible read.
The chapter summaries are really helpful and the activities box encourage you to reflect further.
I’ve recommended it to everyone at work. It really does offer a window into a young persons world, its challenges and how to develop positive responses to them.

    You won’t be disappointed.

This book puts the complex subject of children’s mental health into language that can be understood by anyone.

What I particularly liked was the honesty of the author, who despite being an expert in the field isn’t afraid of admitting to the mistakes she has made with her own children – parents will find this hugely validating! Additionally, the book is filled with practical guidance and skills that will be useful for everyone.

I just wish I could travel back in time and hand a copy to my own mum and dad!

This is a wonderful book not only for parents but also for grandparents. It is a very informative update on modern parenting and what to expect as their grandchildren grow through the different stages of young life.

Dr Beth Mosley is able to talk through the everyday situations and pressures that our young ones are experiencing which are very different to when we were parenting.

Talking through very naturally how to respond under certain circumstances which may be a result of pressures from such things as social media, hormonal changes and expectations from peers and parents.

A grandparent can be an outlet that is less confrontational and more forgiving. A loving patient person to turn to when stressed and anxious.
This book gives us an incite into the mind of a young person more than any other without complicated language and the need for professional jargon…

The examples of situations that Beth has had to deal with and how time and constructive practical yet caring responses have brought near tragedy back from the brink is inspiring.

The book covers areas that a grandparent may find hard to understand as these are modern developments that we wouldn’t have had to deal with when we were growing up ourselves or even when parenting.

Much more could be said but the essence of the review is that it’s a great book for both parents and grandparents to always have open or to listen to on Audible as Dr Mosley is a very engaging reader and one can listen in the car and whilst at home doing the tidying up!

I would highly recommend this book for all parents and grandparents.

I wanted to share I have been meeting lots of young people aged from 16 to early 20’s who are not parents but are reading this book to help with making sense of their own mental health and their friends. They are so excited to read something easy to read, relatable and also helping them get things from the perspective of their parents. A lot of young people are recommending it to their parents! Or have said “I wish my parent had read this when I was growing up”. The grandparents I have spoken to have reassured me it is never too late and the young people I have spoken to have reminded me how hungry our young people are to understand themselves and others better. It fills me with hope.

This book will be a huge help with me bringing up my children, especially as they’re heading into their trickier teenage years. The book is written in an easy to understand and digestible format. I have already used some of the guidance with one of my children. The author helps me to consider and understand how I can support my children – it’s a book I’ll refer back to again and again. I definitely recommend this book 10/10

Got a child who seems to be going through difficulties? Don’t really know how to respond in the right way? Do all your attempt to engage result in being told to eff off? Then this book will be an invaluable guide to helping you to help your child to navigate their difficulties in the context of family life. The truth is that most of us as parents are making it up as we go along. This is fine – until things start to go sideways – then we feel helpless and without strategies to deal with our child. This book is there to help us to improve the way we support our children. It is non-patronising, grounded and practical, no ideology or fads. So buy Happy Families – and watch the difference.

This book covers many important topics which enable parents and carers to have a better understanding of their children’s mental well-being and how to help them thrive. It’s hard to find a book that’s so comprehensive yet also really easy to read. It’s very relateable and provides some useful ideas on how you can practically help your young person. I would highly recommend to parents or anyone that supports a young person.
