It is inconceivable that anyone is not familiar with J K Rowling’s Harry Potter books – the short description is that they are magical for both children and adults. There are many different Harry Potter box sets on the market – this review relates to the children’s hardcover version of the seven books, published by Bloomsbury (United Kingdom) in 2014 with ISBN 9781408856789. The fact it is called the “children’s version” is slightly inaccurate – it simply means it is a “different” design from the “adult” version. To say one box set is for adults and another for children is not correct.

The outer box is a bright red colour with an eye-catching gold dragon design all over. Entry to the seven books is gained by opening a double flap kept secured at the front of the box by a magnet. Although the box is made of a reinforced cardboard, it appears very durable and should not break or be damaged easily.

The books themselves have differently coloured and designed covers, with a gold “Harry Potter” logo on the front of each. The books are 20.5cm in height and 13.5 cm in width and are very strongly bound – even if they are read regularly they should stand the test of time. They are made with relatively light paper and are particularly comfortable to hold when reading – even the larger volumes.

The only reason to consider other alternatives is if you prefer larger text. The United States hardcover box set has larger books, measuring 23.5 cm in height and 16.5 cm in width. However, the American version is significantly heavier to hold, and volumes four, five and seven of the series are particularly heavy, especially for children.

Overall, the United Kingdom hardcover box set looks visually appealing and is very well made. It is very practical and user-friendly due to the relative light weight of the books. Anyone who owns this magical item will enjoy it for many, many years to come.

I’ve loved the Harry Potter series since I was a kid, but never had any of the books myself. Now that I’m in my mid-twenties, I decided it was time to make one of my dreams come true – to get my very own set of all the 7 Harry Potter books. And I couldn’t be happier with this purchase! The books look just wonderful! I know this set was primarily designed for children, but don’t let that discourage you from buying even if you’re older. The dust jackets are beautifully illustrated, with golden letters and stars all over them, and the books look very nice without the dust jackets as well – each of the seven books has a different colour and small golden stars on the front cover. There is also a map of Hogwarts and its surroundings at the beginning of each of the books, and there are no other pictures inside, except for little black stars around the chapter titles. The text is laid out normally, but in the thicker books it is slightly more dense. Therefore don’t be afraid of this children’s set being too childish – it isn’t at all, and I’m sure kids and adults of all ages will love it.

Also, the delivery only took a few days, and although I expected the red box to be damaged after its trip across half of Europe, it wasn’t damaged at all. It was packed in a cardboard box filled with paper to protect the books, so it looks just as good as if I’d just bought it in a store.

As I’ve said, I’m absolutely thrilled with this purchase. This set would make for a wonderful present for any Harry Potter lover, regardless of age.

I got this as a present for a birthday due to the fact that my original books are utterly worn out.
The box is nicely made and a pretty colour. It has a dragon on the front and if you turn it over, there is a picture of Harry Potter on his broomstick on the back. Personally i would have thought it better if Harry Potter was on the front and the dragon on the back, as when the box is on a bookcase/shelf and closed- you can only see the dragon. Meaning that unless you already knew, you probably wouldn’t realise it was a Harry Potter book set.
The doors on the front of the boxset remain CLOSED when you shut them. This is extremely important because it is infuriating when you have a door on something that keeps swinging back open everytime you try to shut it. The books fit snugly. They are a little stiff to get out but i suppose we don’t want gaps all over the shop. Importantly though, they aren’t TOO snug. I have another boxset of books which i feel are too tightly crammed into the box and as a result the box has started to bow out on one side.
The actual books themselves are perfect. Nice quality and they are in the style shown on the picture above.
    I will enjoy reading them.

Not going to review the books’ content – that’s a given. The set is well presented, looks good, although the case is perhaps a tad disappointing- just a little flimsier than I expected. Not sure how long it will last, particularly in conjunction with the next point: I know the books should sit firmly in the case, but it really is quite a struggle to remove one without causing any strain to the book’s spine or the case. The books don’t have a tab to help removal, which would have been very stylish.
    But well worth the outlay.
