Bought this as a gift for my partner. She loves all that craft type of stuff. She does a lot of different crafts everyday, and I bought this in the hope she would like, and find useful. She was tickled pink with it. Apparently, its in an ideal format for beginners, and everything is clearly shown. She’s not done of them yet, but she fully intends to start one shortly. My partner said she would highly recommend it. She said it’s format is great no matter wether your a novice or pro. Make from that what you will, it’s all Greek to me.

I have bought this as a gift for a friend, but as a crocheter myself I’ve been enjoying taking a look through. It has a good mixture of patterns – toys and blankets and household items. I think you probably need a fair amount of crochet experience, but the patterns are clear and I’ve always found if there’s something I really want to make then I make the effort to learn new stitches on YouTube or just keep trying! There are some larger projects that look amazing, like the sorting hat! Personally, I have my eye on the golden snitch blanket which is a really lovely repeat design and looks very effective. Lots of beautiful colour photos throughout, great for crafting Harry Potter fans!

    3.5/5
    Review rewritten after several months.

Movie set patterns of, say, mostly muggle clothes (only 2 out of 9 in the costumes & fashion section are recognisably wizarding style clothes or accessories) worn by the characters are over 1/2 of the patterns (two separate sections dedicated to them) but not counting the 5 pattern amigurumi section (of them mcgonagall’s is incorrect as she hasn’t her spectacle markings- ironically it asks you to use black thread for non spectacle generic markings around the eyes but not actual spectacle markings-what an oversight!), over 2/3 movie inspiration but even then they leach into the 4th section that is meant be inspiration from the wider wizarding world and many an introduction is more about how the item looked on camera than its place in the magical world.

If your only knowledge of Harry Potter came from this book you’d think that there wasn’t an expansive wizarding world, a hugely imaginative universe even when taking only the original books into account, considering how little of the universe is used as pattern inspiration, in favour of muggle style clothes used in the film. A personal preference, perhaps, but am I alone in this opinion?

Secondly, I was expecting more amigurumi. Perhaps amigurumi annoys some crocheters as some people seem to erroneously think that there is little more to crocheting, but, Harry Potter is a series known for its magical beings animals, monsters, spirits and plants.

… Perhaps a separate book of Harry Potter magical creature inspired amigurumi would be an ideal solution. Amigurumi is incredibly popular with the generation that grew up with Harry Potter. An amigurumi Fantastic Beasts! I’d buy it & if the sales of existing amigurumi books are anything to go by, lots of other people would too.

Apart from that, I think that the magical creatures & plants have been terribly underutilised in general. I am particularly dissappointed in the grim’s pattern (as the grim’s teacup pattern) as, excepting a small handful of famous creatures, our diverse, wonderful UK folklaw is terribly underused & I’ve never ever seen a church grim or black shuck pattern (are any amigurumi creators reading this?) of any kind, but, if they hadn’t labelled it I’d have taken a while to recognise it.

Many are good patterns in their own right, but, this is the magical world of Harry Potter, a place of wonder, mystery, alien to muggles like us, a treasure trove of inspiration. I wonder how many other fans would struggle to recognise many of the patterns as Harry Potter inspired without the context of the book? An example of this is the dirigible plum pillow, the same plums Luna used as earrings. It’s a really nice pattern per se & one of the minority inspired by the wizarding world instead of the film set (although its introduction is, yet again, about the filming rather than the item in the wizarding world) but when a hardcore Potter fan like my partner can’t, without context recognise where it & so many of these patterns come from, is there- perhaps- a potential problem emerging? Aside, I’m sure a crochet pattern for actual earrings is a more obvious take. Again, it’s not to say that many of them are not good patterns in their own right. The patterns inspired by outfits worn by the characters in the movies- often muggle chic (would the Wizarding world call it that, perhaps?)- rather than concepts from the books is another matter of personal preference. I quite liked many of them- such as Hermoine’s Godric’s Hollow set. But even for movie fans the patterns are not replicas of the originals (or in some cases even the same type of clothing!) but instead ‘inspired’ by them… so how is that distinguishable from a nice but normal pattern- the likes of which could be found elsewhere?

What I’d have really liked is more inspiration from the books themselves.

It’s not that these film ‘inspirations’ have no place (The Burrow Blanket is lovely & definitely is among the best of these- just what you’d expect among cozy winter nights in at the Burrow) but they take the bulk of the book, at cost of what (I at least think) should have been patterns clearly inspired from the actual books such as magical creatures & plants. An outfit inspired by Wizarding dress robes? Christmas or Halloween decorations inspired by those described in the books in the great hall? Applique inspired by magical plants, animals, ingredients! It’s not to say there are none. But, going back to my first paragraph, considering this is Harry Potter, again, surely the movie set patterns should have been a minority & the wizarding world the bulk of the inspiration?

Only did Dobbie but came out ok. Bit fiddly and would make some adjustments next time. You will DEFINITELY need to change a few things if the project is for a small child.
