Haunting Adeline (Cat and Mouse Duet)

The Manipulator

I can manipulate the emotions of anyone who lets me.
I will make you hurt, make you cry, make you laugh and sigh.
But my words don’t affect him. Especially not when I plead for him to leave.
He’s always there, watching and waiting.
And I can never look away.
Not when I want him to come closer.

The Shadow

I didn’t mean to fall in love.
But now that I have, I can’t stay away.
I’m mesmerized by her smile, by her eyes, and the way she moves.
The way she undresses…
I’ll keep watching and waiting. Until I can make her mine.
And once she is, I’ll never let her go.
Not even when she begs me to.

While not required, it is highly suggested to read the novella, Satan’s Affair, first.

Warning: This book ends on a cliffhanger.

Intense, very intense, keeps you on your toes all the time. There is so much going on at the same time that you don’t have time to really think about how wrong is the stalker situation and how intense he is and obsessive with her. How actually wrong and how crazy a lot of thing are. I was wondering how I would feel if he wouldn’t be doing what he was doing, instead of fighting people trafficking and getting rid of these perverse people, would I as a reader actually see him as a good main lead, do I see him as a good love interest only because he does the world some justice? What if he was a drug dealer or killed people just for fun of it? That is actually not far from truth. He likes what he is doing and no one has mede him do it, it’s his own decision.
I understand why there are so many trigger warnings about this book (have they always existed??? Or only nowadays the books grasp more disturbing topics that we need to be warned. RH books definitely should have a warning in my opinion as I don’t like them for myself).
But I’m in a little awe how much things are in this book. Not only their stalker – love situation, she is investigating her grand-grandmothers murder and in the sane time he is trying to find the psychos who are sacrificing kids in a ritual, her best friend is actually a hacker and working for him. He kills a man only because he gave her an orgasm, only we find out that he was actually a really bad man after his death. It doesn’t escape my mind that he actually cut out her ex’s tongue because he was swearing that she throw him out… if she wouldn’t, he would have killed him, and he was not any kind of criminal… probably the only one in all this story, but he still did what he did, if all the other deaths can be justified in our eyes as they all did bad things to other people, children, women etc… then the ex was not really justified. He was jealous, and he would kill anyone.
As mad as it all sounds, it is not a book for everyone, I didn’t really like the rough sex and fear indulged play… and that he forced him self on her even if her body wanted him her mind didn’t, I still think it is unconscious … even if she afterwards loves it and craves it…. BUT I really enjoyed reading this book, these characters! There was no page when I wanted to skip-read or put it away. I was intrigued, enthralled and excited to finish this book. This is where the alfa males of fantasy romances that do crazy things, unexplainable things, destroying their enemies just because they exist, doesn’t feel so bad in my eyes and I absolutely love them… And so what if this character is a little more psychotic only because this is a realistic setting, the world we kinda live in … just two people with out any special powers or abilities, why shouldn’t I love them as much I love the unexplainable. And I do! I really do! A little craziness is not gonna throw me off, I hope. Im glad the next book is out, because I don’t ever want to read a book with a cliffhanger like this ever in my life! And I usually don’t, as I don’t like long series because I need my HEA then and theere… but I did anyway, maybe because there is only 2 book, I convinced that I will manage series of 2 books. And I can’t wait to read the next one.

This was my first dip into the darker fantasy pool. The only other mildly comparable level of darkness I have previously read being Terry Goodkind’s Wizard First rule series. I went into this story with trepidation as I wasn’t sure the level of darkness was going to be for me. However, I have to say I am now officially converted to the dark side. I loved this book, the suspense, characters internal battles and shock factor really worked for me. The spice was excellent and I would highly recommend this book.

Before you consider reading this book, please look up the trigger warnings. I’ve put some below:
TW: Stalker, Sexual Assault, Murder, Object play, Home Invasion.

There is also a cross over with H.D. Carlton’s ‘Satan’s Affair’, and I would recommend that you read this novella FIRST. This will give you a great idea of her writing style, although it’s gorier than this book, it’s a good place to start.

Moving on, this book is spectacular. It’s a Dark Romance, so you have to go into with an open mind as to what might happen. With regards to the trigger warnings, this wasn’t as dark as I had initially expected, and the writer has the most incredible way of making you fall for the morally grey stalker (surprise surprise)

Adeline goes from strength to strength throughout, consistently holding onto her feisty personally. Zade, well he grows on you, a LOT. (I’ll leave that to the imagination and for when you read it)

This book is filled to the brim with tension in terms of the plot and the spice which is 5 START.

H.D. Carlton is an INSTANT pick up, and I would recommend giving it a go if you are not affected by any of the TW’s.

Why oh why did I leave this book in my library waiting to be read?
I must admit with the trigger warnings & personal experience I didn’t think I’d be able to read it. Boy oh Boy am I glad I did.
The storyline to this book is fascinating, I have never read anything like it.
Who falls in love with their stalker? Just like her great-grandmother eh.

The spice is yummy and I now wish I had a Zade for myself, stalker behaviour included.
For those not sure on reading it due to triggers, give it a go, you certainly won’t be disappointed.
