This is one of my favourite cook books. I love the cuisine and Verna’s enthusiasm shines through in the description provided for each dish. Handy tips, a huge range of dishes, big and small, loads of great info. The chilli oil and dumpling sauce recipes OMG, should be in a jar in supermarkets.
My favourite bit is the pairing suggestions where Verna creates a set menu for you.
The final comment is how big the book is, so much stuff in there. Bit worried about the 2nd book, like a rock group, sometimes the debut album is too good. No worries for Verna tho, she will have a tv show travelling the world, sampling world cuisine.

Bought this to support Verna whom I started following on Instagram when she did the “80 days of eggs” posts. The book covers (mostly) simple recipes, and I really appreciate the straightforward explanations she includes about the history / heritage / personal significance of the dishes, with easy substitutions to make them vegan or vegetarian as needed. Such inclusivity is appreciated even though I’m an omnivore. What really struck me were the personal stories that kick off each chapter. This is a young lady who has been through a lot, and her relationship with and passion for food has been a thread that runs through her life and this book. The book comes across authentic, unpretentious, and is a good “starter cookbook” especially for young people or those less experienced in Asian cooking. For the more advanced, there are recipes to make bao buns and dumplings from scratch also.

A great purchase and I suspect I’ll be gifting a few copies!

I came across the author on TikTok, which is where I get most of my recipes. I tried her ginger and spring onion sea bass, which convinced me to buy my first recipe book in years!

It’s great – not too complicated at all, and most things I’ve tried have been tasty. There’s a fab tofu recipe. I’d buy another book from her in the future if it’s targeted at the same complexity level – I’m not someone who wants to spend hours cooking!

I recently had the pleasure of diving into a new Asian inspired cookbook that truly captivated all my senses. “Have You Eaten?” not only delivers delectable recipes but also weaves into a rich tapestry of personal anecdotes about family gatherings, travels and cultural experiences, adding a heartfelt dimension to the book. It’s like having a friend guide you through the culinary traditions of Asia, sharing not just the recipes but the love and memories that accompany them.

The recipes themselves are a treasure trove of Asian cuisine. From the spicy flavours of Thailand to the delicate tastes of Japan, this cookbook offers a wide array of dishes to explore. Whether you’re a seasoned cook or a novice in the kitchen, the clear instructions and ingredient lists make it accessible for all.

This cookbook has an amazing range of dishes that will inspire you to cook more and develop your tastebuds by trying out new recipes. My favourite part of the book is how she creates a full menu with the dishes you create and they are so delicious together. Highly recommend.

I’ve been waiting for Verna to release a cookbook since she launched her instagram account (vernahungrybanana). Verna takes you on a journey from her childhood to the present day which is down-to-earth and honest and explore her British Chinese heritage as well as her family’s history.

The recipes themselves are also highly accessible (and also adaptable for vegans and vegetarians). I would also say there is something in there for everyone who is interested in East and Southeast Asian food. The kimchi udon is simply delicious. Other recipes include Thai prad kra pow, black pepper tofu, beef hofun, kimchi fried rice, tomato and egg, and so many other great classics as well as Verna’s creations. I will be keeping this book off of my bookshelf and put it in the kitchen this year because I just know I’ll use it often.

Already looking forward to the next one! 🙂

Just love looking through a book that reminds me of my childhood growing up in south east Asia, with the recipes being so doable and accessible here in the UK! Thank you for writing this book Verna!

Verna’s book gives a great insight into a vast number of asian dishes. For someone who has a liking for the Asian flavour palette, I do find I eat the same kind of things over and over. Having this book has been an eye-opener for me- there’s plenty of quick dishes I can prepare with few ingredients!

The content is nicely presented, with recipes sorted by mood which is a nice touch.

You really get a sense of Verna’s passion for cooking and what led to where she is now.
I am looking forward to trying some of these recipes myself !!!
