Gripped from the first page. I’m not normally a fan of the graphic novel format, but after a couple of pages it had me hooked. I forgot that I was reading a picture/comic book and the heart warming story took over. The book tells such a sweet story of innocent young love with all its shyness, embarrassment, humour and awkwardness and is incredibly relatable for anyone who is or ever has been a teenager with a crush. Beautifully done. It’s addictive reading; both myself and my 12 year old daughter enjoyed the whole series immensely. As a cautious mum, I would highly recommend reading for preteens. It deals with young romance in a sensitive and age appropriate way, encouraging mutual respectful and unrushed, considerate behaviour within relationships.
Fantastically refreshing to have the two protagonists as a homosexual couple of young boys, a lesbian couple and a trans girl. Such cute characters and relatable no matter your sexual identity or orientation.
Later novels in the series deal with serious topics such as eating disorders and anxiety in a sensible and informative way. Gripping reading with relevant and current themes for a preteen/teen but handled in a safe and cautious way.
Not only encourages acceptance of diversity, but makes it impossible not to fall in love with this quirky group of friends and their experiences and adventures. Love love love ????

It’s quite embarrassing how far beyond the target age group I am for this body of work, but in this case I’m as proud of my blushes as Nick is to call Charlie his boyfriend! What a wonderful piece of work this is! Sheer happiness on the page, with a smidgeon of bittersweet nostalgia to spice up the flavour, at least for us “oldies”.
How this wonderful author crafts the characters and relationship of Nick and Charlie is a sheer joy to discover. A genuine affection seems to emanate from the page as you are invited deeper into the world of Nick and Charlie, and I found myself experiencing this graphic novel with an ever widening smile on my face.
To have such a positive example of what not only discovering but also embracing a homophile life can be like, is so important as to make this work historic, and I make no apologies for how grand that statement sounds. On the one hand it’s sad that a story like this still has to document the bullying one receives and the uncertainty one goes though when “coming out”, (even Charlie states he thought things were supposed to be better now) but it’s testament to how resilient and powerful love in any guise is that it can withstand and flourish despite the inevitable weight of bigotry it has to shoulder.
I think it is better now; at least governments can no longer get away with backing homophobia in schools, as they did when I was there, and I think this story, and the wonderful art therein, just exemplifies how important and beautiful human intimacy is, wherever it is found.
When I think on what this wonderful author has already shared with us, it makes me feel happy. When I think on where it will go, it makes me feel happy. Whenever I think of Nick and Charlie et al (including Nellie, of course) it puts a smile on my face. What better feeling is there than that?

It’s a good story and the netflix show is great

Volume 2 picks up right where volume 1 left off, after Nick and Charlie’s first kiss. Charlie thinks he’s ruined his friendship with Nick and Nick realises he desires more than just friendship from Charlie. They talk it out and Charlie helps Nick come to terms with his sexuality. Again, my favourite character is Nick and my least favourite character is Harry. I recommend this book because Nick and Charlie’s relationship is beautiful and it is so important that Nick is provided with support in his coming out. I wish that everyone was granted the time and space to come out on their own terms like Nick was. “Going out with you is like a dream.”
