‘Absolutely delightful. Sweet, romantic, kind. Beautifully paced. I loved this book.’ RAINBOW ROWELL, author of Carry On

Charlie didn’t think Nick could ever like him back, but now they’re officially boyfriends. Charlie’s beginning to feel ready to say those three little words: I love you.

Nick’s been feeling the same, but he’s got a lot on his mind – not least coming out to his dad, and the fact that Charlie might have an eating disorder.

As summer turns to autumn and a new school year begins, Charlie and Nick are about to learn a lot about what love means.

By Alice Oseman, winner of the YA Book Prize, Heartstopper is about love, friendship, loyalty and mental illness. It encompasses all the small moments of Nick and Charlie’s lives that together make up something larger, which speaks to all of us.

Contains discussions about mental health, eating disorders, and references to self-harm.

‘The queer graphic novel we wished we had at high school.’ Gay Times

*Shortlisted for Book of the Year in the British Book Awards*

Heartstopper was Children’s #1 bestseller in the TCM chart on 23 April 2022.

Gripped from the first page. I’m not normally a fan of the graphic novel format, but after a couple of pages it had me hooked. I forgot that I was reading a picture/comic book and the heart warming story took over. The book tells such a sweet story of innocent young love with all its shyness, embarrassment, humour and awkwardness and is incredibly relatable for anyone who is or ever has been a teenager with a crush. Beautifully done. It’s addictive reading; both myself and my 12 year old daughter enjoyed the whole set immensely. As a cautious mum, I would highly recommend reading for preteens. It deals with young romance in a sensitive and age appropriate way, encouraging mutual respectful and unrushed, considerate behaviour within relationships.
Fantastically refreshing to have the two protagonists as a homosexual couple of young boys, a lesbian couple and a trans girl. Such cute characters and relatable no matter your sexual identity or orientation.
Later novels in the series deal with serious topics such as eating disorders and anxiety in a sensible and informative way. Gripping reading with relevant and current themes for a preteen/teen but handled in a safe and cautious way.
Not only encourages acceptance of diversity, but makes it impossible not to fall in love with this quirky group of friends and their experiences and adventures. Love love love ????

Content Warning: self-harm/eating disorders. Nick learns how to support Charlie through doctors appointments, hospital appointments, therapy, meal plans and adjustments, and relapses. A very bittersweet story, as there are some very positive aspects; friendship, family, love. My favourite character is still Nick and least favourite character is David again. I recommend this book because Alice Oseman knows how to portray serious topics through simple, heartfelt graphic novels, with the beginning of the Heartstopper series focusing on LGBTQ+ issues, and the end of the series shining light on mental health issues. I’m all ready for season 2. “You can just be there. To listen. To talk. To cheer him up if he’s having a bad day. And on the bad days… you can ask what you could do to make things easier. Standing by his side, even when things are hard – but also knowing that… sometimes people need more support than just one person can give. That’s love, darling.”

I was so taken with the film on Netflix that I had to buy the books and waiting for volume 5 in December. I am 78 and I found myself giggling at so many things in the books, also touched by the sad times as well. My friend who is gay said that he wished the books and film had been around when he was a boy as it would have helped him coming ‘out’. As an older woman I feel Alice Osman has touched so many people and you don’t have to be gay to thoroughly enjoy them.
