Telling the story of Newcastle through some of its most competitive moments, including Kevin Keegan and Bobby Robson’s stewardships, as well as touching on some of its trickier times, television presenter and diehard fan Pete Graves recaps the team’s history and goes inside the club to show what is so exciting about this team today.

Featuring interviews with key figures past and present, including Eddie Howe himself, Graves builds a picture of what’s happening with Newcastle, both on and off the pitch, as they climb the league and set their sights on silverware.

With extensive research and unparalleled access, Here to Compete is the incredible story of a team reborn and the man who is on course to build an empire.

Like a lot of Newcastle fans, I lived through the period covered by this book – the good, the bad, and the good again – so there’s not a lot of new information (except maybe the chapter on Eddie Howe’s time at Bournemouth)

But reading this, and having been to the same games as Pete, you’ll feel the goosebumps at the memories of seeing that patch of hallowed turf, you’ll hear King Kev and Sir Bobby as you read the quotes from conversation they had with the author.

To misquote a great man, you’ll love it!

This book was definitely a must read for any Newcastle fan or just a football fan in general. Lots of good stories and time flies by as you read. Made me relive the best moments of my team. Highly recommend.

Have to admit I’d bought this as a gift for someone, being a footy fan I had a ‘scan’. This turned into a late night and the book finished in one go. Needless to say a 2nd copy is on the way for the intended recipient of the 1st (spine-bent) copy…. Highly recommended (not just for Newcastle fans) and I eagerly await what Pete might have to come in the future!

Gravesy takes us on the rollercoaster of emotion it has been to be a Magpie from the 90s to the present day. The book is well written and shows the passion and emotion that the author feels for the Club.

It includes many personal anecdotes from a man who found himself lucky enough to be on the inside, as well as input from club legends.

It dovetail’s nicely with Ferra’s ‘Boy on the Shed’ which I read not so long ago (also recommended!) to bring us through the doldrums of the Ashley era and out the other side.

I read it in a day and a half, not because I’m an avid reader but because I really couldn’t put it down. Re-living the joy of the last two years, reflecting and learning a little more about how Eddie Howe ticks. The biographical chapter on Howe as a young man and how he came to management, plus those early faltering footsteps at Bournemouth; A real eye opener into the background of the enigma that is Eddie Howe. I particularly enjoyed the story of how Jason Tindall (Eddie’s right hand man whom the Toon faithful have affectionately dubbed ‘Mad Dog’) found himself having to dust off his boots and play sub for one game as they were so strapped for players.

An interesting and entertaining read that I could sum up as an open love letter to Eddie, our owners, and our team, penned by Gravesy on behalf of us all.
