Poppy is a witch who has accidentally cursed a pendant – and sold it to Axl, a famous stage m magician. Things start to go a bit awry….
I had just finished the first book in the series, Hex Appeal, that I really enjoyed and was looking forward to this one. There is some overlap of characters, but this can definitely be read as a standalone. Again there are witches, ghosts, flying broomsticks, time travel and some not-so-real magic, together with plenty of humour and (spicy) romance. I can definitely recommend this book as an ideal escape from real life – or is there some truth in here and do witches really exist amongst us?
I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley, however this did not influence my review of the book and I had already pre-ordered it as I enjoyed it so much.

Witches, magic and cursed pendants, what’s not to like?
Poppy is a witch, and she works at a magic shop in Covent Garden. One day her shop assistant sells a cursed pendant to celebrity magician Alex Storm. A pendant Poppy cursed after seeing the women she loved with someone else.
When trying to retrieve the pendant, a terrible accident happens. And when all hell breaks loose she is thrust together with Alex to find the pendant before the curse causes more harm.
I thorougly enjoyed this book by Kate Johnson. Definitely a laug-out-loud rom-com. Poppy is such a likable character, and the chemistry between her and Alex make the sparks fly off the pages! Sexy and fun!

I always enjoy Kate Johnson’s books; she writes heroes and heroines to fall in love with, and her books are so full of wit and charm and humour, and really good dialogue.
Hex and the City is all this and more. (I hate writing reviews because I’m terrified of spoilering)
The first quarter of the book introduces the characters; Poppy, a real witch, and her not-coven and Axl/Alex, a fake magician, plus hangers-on. With Kate’s usual deft touch, Things Happen.
The second quarter sees Poppy and Alex falling for each other, with potentially disastrous consequences.
The third quarter (my least favourite in any book) has More Things Happening, and Poppy and Alex try to figure their boundaries out.
The final quarter actually had me gasping aloud, because I Did Not See That Coming.
Happy endings all over, exit right, pursued by a bear. (I might be lying about the bear)
Anyway, if you want a big, warm, lovely hug of a book, get Hex and the City.

“‘Got drunk, accidentally cursed an object, forgot about the object,’ Iris summarised as Poppy tailed off. ‘We’ve all been there.’” – ‘Hex and the City’ by Kate Johnson.
I combined reading this witchy romantic comedy with its unabridged audiobook edition, narrated by Catrin Walker-Booth.
Poppy is a witch. She is currently living in a beautiful, ramshackle house next in Highgate, the home of Iris, the head of her coven. She works at Hubble Bubble, a magic shop in Covent Garden owned by Sylvia, another member of the coven. The shop sells crystals, broomsticks, and the like though nothing really magical as that would be irresponsible. Poppy has started creating jewellery to be sold there. Poppy also has very long hair that appears to have a mind of its own.
One evening she has rather too much to drink following a sighting of her former girlfriend getting frisky with another woman outside a pub. Upset she accidentally places a curse on an Eye of Odin pendant. The next day she hardly remembers doing it.
However, things get complicated when her fellow shop assistant, Elspeth, sells the pendant to celebrity stage magician, Axl Storm, who is looking for a gift for Yelena, a valkyrie in his Viking-themed magic show. Poppy realises that she has to retrieve the pendant and remove the curse before it hurts anyone. She confesses all to Iris and so they head off to the Mysterio Theatre to retrieve it. Of course, things proceed to go spectacularly wrong.
The romance side of the book comes in the form of Axl, whose ‘rockstar Viking’ look bears more than a passing resemblance to a certain hammer-wielding Asgardian. She calls him ‘man-bun’ and he calls her ‘Rapunzel’. Sweet. Of course, there are many adventures along the way, including time slips, ghosts, and a restless mummy. Add to this the mundane rom-com tropes of complicated family relationships and various misunderstandings.
The book is set primarily in modern day London and takes place in the same fictional universe as her 2022 ‘Hex Appeal’. However, while there are mentions of ‘the Essex cousins’ and a bit of character crossover, the books work fine individually.
With respect to the audiobook, Catrin Walker-Booth had previously narrated ‘Hex Appeal’. She has a light, clear voice that was well suited to this title. I have also enjoyed her readings of other recent audiobooks.
Overall, ‘Hex and the City’ was great fun and I ended up reading it in a single day as I was enjoying it so much. I am hoping for more ‘Hex’ books from Kate Johnson as they have a great balance between comedy-drama, romance, and witchcraft-themed fantasy.

I love to read, and being able to become absorbed in a story. This just didn’t do that for me. I picked it up 4 stones and couldn’t get past the 2nd chapter. Probably better suited for younger readers. However I have no idea how it ends

Lighthearted and funny read.

I was expecting a fun but silly Halloween romance but it’s so much better than that. Action, magic and feel good romance. Thoroughly recommend!
