Explore Ireland’s fascinating story with more than 100 maps.
From the early history of the Emerald Isle to the modern day, Ireland has evolved rapidly – along with the ways in which it has been mapped. Cartography has not only kept pace with these changes, but often driven them.
Combining the artistic world of early cartography with modern computerised surveys, this is a beautiful and unique addition to any map- or history-lover’s collection. Irish author and historian Pat Liddy produces an invaluable history of Ireland and its relationship with its neighbours, and indeed, the world.

Having a fondness for maps and history, I found this book enlightening. The amalgamation of artistry from early cartography with the precision of modern techniques was striking. It offers a unique perspective on Ireland’s evolution. The narrative is clear and provides a comprehensive account without overwhelming the reader. It’s a decent read for those curious about how Ireland has been perceived throughout the ages.

Bought this as a gift for my father-in-law who retired to rural Ireland a number of years ago, and I know he’s going to love it. It’s a beautifully put together collection of maps and historical text to give context, including some unusual ideas such as a map of the USA showing the percentages of Irish immigrants in each state!
This book oozes quality, and would make an ideal gift for anyone with an interest in Irish history, and the map illustrations alone make it worth the price. It’s a lovely book.

This is a lovely book that I’m really glad to have. The design of the book is beautiful and I have been showing it to everyone who has come over lately. The authors have collected some wonderful resources and they are reproduced in such a lovely way that it is a pleasure to flip it open to a random page and start browsing.
The author also includes succinct and easy to understand descriptions that help to better learn from this excellent collection. The images range from paintings and photographs from prehistory to contemporary Ireland and a section about rising sea levels, and include things like the mapping of Viking raids, the Black Death, and Tudor Ireland, just to name a few of the highlights.
Hugely enjoyable and a lovely addition to my collection.

My partners family are Irish, most of them still live on the Emerald Isle, however his parents moved to England back in the 70’s to work and he is the first of his family to have been born outside of Ireland. His Dad is an avid history buff, and even though he knows his history well, I thought he would appreciate this book.
The book is wonderful. I thought I’d have a quick flick through before passing it along, however it’s so beautifully laid out and has such a vast array of interesting information he’s going to have to wait a while for it yet.
It’s a hardback volume and covers the history of Ireland in maps right through from prehistoric times up to present day, covering such subjects as Ireland through the Viking era, the Tudor period, The Troubles, with insightful information on immigration and where the populace has gone on to settle in other countries, much like my father-In-law.
The maps are detailed, and each is accompanied by an explanation as to what it’s showing and the history surrounding the period it depicts.
There’s a lovely section on Irish surnames and where they originate from.
A well thought-out and researched book with some truly fascinating subject matter, this book is a must have for anyone who is Irish or has an interest in history.

Despite being a Brit and fairly well travelled in Ireland, this book has made me realise how little I actually know about the Emerald Isles once I peel back the cliches and knowledge of the past 150 years. This is a really lovely book – as an item is very well presented – and takes the history of the island right back to it’s earliest formation right through to the present day. Each map is bought to life by engaging commentary and I’ve found it best to read one or two maps at a time, which have had me reaching for Google to research further. Highly recommended and suitable for anyone, school age and upwards.

This is quite a niche book, but it’s also quite a nice book for anyone with an interest in Irish history.
It’s packed full of lush imagery detailing different maps from various period’s in Ireland’s complex history.
Every image is accompanied with a chunk of text giving detail on the maps shown and the period.
It’s a lovely gift for Irish history fans. Nice hardback coffee table book.
