Another great DK book. Full of colourful illustrations and easy to follow text – but doesn’t dumb it down. So good!

I bought this book for my 11 years old grandson. It seemed an excellent way for him to get an idea of world history, but before giving it to him, I read through it myself and discovered that p. 49 contains the following gratuitous horror (said to be from Plutarch): “A Spartan boy stole a young fox and hid it under his coat. He let it tear out his intestines with its teeth and claws, and died up the spot, rather than be found out.” No child should be subjected to this grisly image, which they may find extremely disturbing and be unable to forget. Its inclusion makes this book entirely unsuitable for children aged 9-12, the target audience.

A very well written book! Couldn’t believe it had up to 2019! History is important part of growing up and this enables a person to learn throughout the years and gets the main point per year.

You can’t really go wrong with DK books. They are packed with information and I used to have a good read of these when I worked for a local bookstore. These books are for all ages however a lot of parents buy these for children as they are very child friendly. I work in a school so I more often than not these type of books end up in our school library when I’ve had a good read. This one might not make it there as it useful to refer back to depending on what’s being covered in the classroom.
