£10.40£14.20 (-27%)
More than 150 recipes for making the most of your home-grown fruit and vegetables – from warming soups and bakes to vibrant summer salads and tangy preserves.
There is nothing as satisfying as growing your own produce – home-grown fruit and vegetables, picked and used at the height of freshness, are more tasty and nutritious than any supermarket offerings. Not only that, but they also cut down on food miles and can be a far more budget friendly way to eat. Home-grown Harvest is a celebration of the bounty you can grow in your garden, back yard or even windowbox. Cultivating your own fruit and vegetables does not have to mean eating the same dishes days in a row to use up produce. Instead, this book will show you how to use creatively what you grow in an array of exciting combinations. Simply organised, the book makes each vegetable or fruit the star of its own chapter, providing a wealth of different recipes to use up any gluts you may have (from the garden or a trip to the farmers’ market). From fresh dishes such as Triple Tomato Risotto with Basil or Strawberry Tiramisu, to preserves and chutneys, which can be stored for future use, each recipe is selected because it is rich in fresh produce. With handy tips and hints for preparing vegetables, and beautiful photographs throughout, Home-grown Harvest is an invaluable guide to cooking seasonally and eating very well indeed.

First published in 2011, this is a compilation of recipes from various writers, some also published elsewhere.
That said, it is a handy volume to pull off the kitchen bookshelf for ideas, especially if faced with a ‘glut’ from the garden, as it is organised by type, then sub-divided, as per the CONTENTS page at the front (1st image below refers), namely.
~ ROOT VEGETABLES
~ BULB & STEM VEGETABLES
~ FRUITING VEGETABLES
~ PODDING VEGETABLES
~ GREENS & SALAD VEGETABLES
~ COURGETTES/ZUCCHINI & SQUASHES
~ MUSHROOMS
~ TREE FRUITS
~ SOFT FRUITS
The current LOOK INSIDE facility above gives an idea of the layout of the chunky, well produced publication, including the short INTRODUCTION & the 2-page alphabetical INDEX, along with some recipes to see if it is the style for you.
I like the layout.
Utilising the page space to the best and without compromising too much on text size, IMO, the recipes are often more than one to a page, and, occasionally, in batches of 4 shorter ones, e.g. pages 22 & 23 with:
~ MADEIRA-GLAZED ROAST CARROTS
~ SPICED CARROT DIP
~ CARROTS WITH CREAM & HERBS
~ VICHY CARROTS WITH FRESH GINGER
Each main section opens with a double page spread, with the title on the right-hand side with a relevant, full page, colour illustration on the left.
Each recipe is headed with an opening note, the title in lower case, the list/s of ingredients and the method.
Handy TIPS, along with NOTES, are dotted throughout, and the majority of recipes are accompanied by a full colour illustration to give an idea of what you are aiming for on the plate.
From the back cover (2nd & 3rd images below refer):

A couple of the tasty sounding PUMPKIN recipes are on my list for next week’s veg surplus (at the time of writing), along with TOFFEE APPLES, the week after.
…but I have already indulged in:
‘FENNEL & LEMON RISOTTO’, with an opening note that includes:
‘Adding a nip of vodka towards the end of cooking adds a delightful flavour to this risotto…’
Indeed, it does!
The last page of the book accredits the various recipes & photography (last image below refers).

We’ve just taken on an allotment, and bought this book as we’re excited about using our crops in meals. We haven’t harvested much yet (just a courgette and a couple of strawberries), but we’ve already used this book loads for our weekly Abel and Cole delivery of fresh food. I love that the recipes are so varied, that there’s plenty of bakes and cakes as well as savouries, and that the photography is so appetising. So far we’ve cooked about 5-6 recipes and loved them all. We found that the cooking times are a little on the long side, so check your dish about 5 minutes before the stated times to avoid burning.

Lovely range of recipes to use home grown produce, still worth buying if you don’t have an allotment!
