How to tone and sculpt your body, even if you hate cardio or have never stepped inside a gym (and don’t plan on doing so!)
At one point or another we’ve all told ourselves, “I’m going to sign up for a gym membership, and really do it this time,” or, “I swear I’ll do my workout later on tonight.”
We all know the benefits of exercise: It improves our physical and mental health, gives us more energy, and boosts our self-image.
So why is it so hard to start an exercise regimen, and even harder to stick to it?
Despite our best intentions, life gets in the way and there always seems to be an obstacle stopping us from actively trying to live healthier.
Whatever the reason, continuing to live a sedentary lifestyle isn’t doing you any favors.
In fact, physical inactivity is the 4th leading risk factor for global mortality and is a strong predictor for weight gain, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic conditions.
Does this mean that you have to make drastic lifestyle changes to start improving your health, mentally and physically? Or that you need to give up time doing what you love just so you can spend hours in the gym?
Not at all.

There isn’t too much to say about this book which is a testament to what it tries to achieve. For anyone trying to break through and improve their quality of life through becoming a fitter, stronger and healthier person, I couldn’t recommend a better place to start.
I have been training consistently in bodyweight fitness for nearly a whole year now, and if I had a book like this at the start, my progress would probably have been much faster.
Sure, this book will give you exercises that you can find anywhere; a simple google search will result in 100’s more exercises that you could use too, but Archie’s book does far more than just provide mere images and instructions.
What you’ll find in this book and in few places elsewhere are the fundamentals to training and MAINTAINING good health. It covers key aspects that are so often overlooked in fitness programs, including how to properly stretch, warm up and cool down, as well as things such as why you should be training the rotator cuff, something seriously overlooked in the fitness community. Whilst reading I couldn’t help but feel that Archie was looking out for me; his knowledge in the medical field shines through in this respect.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Archie has successfully hit the nail on the head with regards to training, and that is that it DOESN’T HAVE TO BE SCARY. Anybody can pick this book up and follow it, and given that the exercises can be done nearly anywhere, it truly is for everybody and anybody: the total beginner, or a long time fitness enthusiast, this book is for you.

I was looking for some inspiration to give me the motivation to get back into some form of fitness routine. I’ve done the ‘join the gym’ thing a few times, quickly followed by ‘it’s cancel the membership’ time.
What attracted me to the book in the first instance, was that there was no image of a super fit trainer displaying a body image which is often almost impossible to replicate. The book and instructions are easy to follow. I particularly appreciated the anatomy illustrations. My arm strength has always been weaker than I would have liked, so to visualise the inner workings of a particular area really helps to focus on the specific exercise. I can now confidently say that I can now perform several push ups in a minute.
The author has written an engaging, comprehensive yet easy to understand workout book which continues to encourage me to maintain my new fitness regime….and best of all, no more wasted gym membership, I can do it all my exercise for free at home!

This book could not have come at a better time, given lockdown 2: electric boogaloo. Engaging, motivating and helpful for busy students who need an extra kick up the arse to workout on some days. A.G Scott provides a diverse array of workout options for those who are more experienced or completely new to exercise. In addition, as he is a medical student there is a lot of information about the importance of warming up, cooling down and looking after your body as well as providing stretches. Finally, as someone who is incredibly unorganised and unhealthy when it comes to food, the workout meal plan examples at the end of this book were an absolute lifesaver. Plus, as a starving student, it is much more cost effective to buy this book and save the remaining cost of a gym membership (or do what i did and spend the rest on booze)

I would definitely recommend this book to have in the home to help anyone get fit or just to stay fit.
Easy and simple to follow as each step and workout explained on how to tone your body and lose weight or build muscle and includes the benefits of each exercise.
There’s helpful advice with tips on how to make a start to get fit and to progress to more difficult workouts with good illustration pictures also an excellent weekly workout with a meal plan you can follow along with nutrition advice.
A great book to read and to have, it covers all fitness aspects and is well written by a very knowledgeable medical student .

With a combination of both lockdown, gym closures and a hint of apathy it was annoying to pick up a book which told me I had no excuses. Well that wasn’t quite how it was worded but this book is a home work out book, a guide for those who either don’t want to or can’t get to a gym, it highlights the fact that that we can do almost everything we need to keep fit at him without paying for a gym membership if that doesn’t appeal. If it does appeal – then great, I still think this book could be of benefit to you as many of the exercises could easily be adapted to a gym environment.
Each chapter focuses on a muscle group (arms, glutes etc) but it doesn’t bombard with 20 different options, instead starting with the basics and adding intermediate tips or techniques as you go along, so if you can already do a press up it gives a few advance variations.
Any equipment needed is minimal, from some weights to a chair here and there. Even the weights can be substituted for kitchen goods but like most people I had some weights gathering dust so it was good to use them again with a different programme.
The illustrations are just that, they are relatively simple drawings to show how the exercises can be done and none of the exercises are SO advanced that you would need much more than that though of course if in doubt please google it to make sure you are doing it ok.
All in all I really enjoyed this book, while definitely helpful for a beginner it isn’t so simplistic that it alienates anyone. In fact one or two of the exercises are more on the advanced side with chin ups and head stands for example – though again – these aren’t labelled as basic.
Well written, you can tell it’s a passion of the author and genuinely I hope to see more of what he writes in the future as he has a very nice natural style that makes you feel like you really are making a difference.
