From understanding what adoption is, through to step by step guidance on the entire process and the challenges that come up along the way, this is the only book you will need to read on adoption.
Written by an author who was adopted herself, who has looked after over twenty children and who works with a fostering and adoption agency that deals specifically with breakdowns, this book will teach you how to confidently navigate the system and build a strong and lasting relationship with your child.
Whilst very much being the unvarnished truth, this is an empowering guide that will ensure you feel in control and know where to turn to for help no matter what:
With a positive attitude and the right tools, adopting a child can be very rewarding – don’t try to overthink it, don’t try to love, just do right by them and as you learn about each other the love, kindness and acceptance will grow.

How to Adopt a child is a clear guide to the adoption process. It can be read in one sitting or dipped into as a reference on topics such as abuse, neglect, the adoption process, education Health Care plans and indeed many other factors of relevance to adoption. I think Louise Allen has excelled at balancing details from her own narrative as well as the stories of others including adoptees and adopters. As an academic and therapist by background, I think that the book provides an insightful account of adoption that student social workers and other professionals will find thought provoking. As an adopter, I believe that the text highlights the challenges that many adoptive families face and should be read by prospective adopters during their preparation training. Every children’s service and school should have a copy too so as to ensure that staff better appreciate the lived experiences of adoptees and adopters.
Finally, It will make you want to read Louise Allens other, more biographical, books too.

I’d been searching for a book that would help me through the adoption process rather than the ‘parenting’. This was the book! Really helpful and well written… Everything I was looking for

Louise Allen ably, and with the deepest humanity, lifts the lid on what is, for many, a misunderstood process riven with hidden failings and worse outcomes, despite the possibilities for the best. There is much to learn as well as much hope.
Louise’s voice and perspective are the most authentic available and carers, prospective adopters, and professionals should have this book as their ‘go to’ manual. Everything in this book has both purpose and credibility.
Caring human relationships are beautiful and none more so than those involving children. Louise uses her own experiences of the care system, both as an adopted child and later, as a foster parent to describe what is, what could be and what should be done with children in care. The emphasis here is on ‘care’.
I cannot praise this book highly enough. Having worked with children in the care system for many years, I applaud Louise Allen for offering much-needed insight and guidance at a time when children’s lived experiences should be protected and preserved. Thank you, Louise. This book will reach many and change lives.
