Excellent handbook of brain health based on the latest scientific research and positive psychology. Provides detailed but accessible explanations of how the brain works, how the brain and body work together and all of the variables which affect the brain and its functions such as nutrition, sleep and exercise. The most exciting revelation is how much the brain is alterabile by so many factors and how it can be improved and “future proofed” by applying helpful changes to both your mental and physical habits. Highlighted throughout is the inextricable link between mind and body and the book provides a lifetime of information and extremely useful practices to get you going on improving your emotional and psychological health. I loved reading through it first from beginning to end and then dipping back into specific chapters each of which provides a “take away” summation of what is explored and explained. Furthermore, Wilson’s superb and fluid writing style renders the handbook a joy to read. I highly recommend it.

A book about your brain and how to safeguard your mental health. There is a helpful introduction to the types of research we can encounter out there and some of the pitfalls when considering sources. Wilson writes with clarity, which is helpful when explaining the complex functions of the brain. Each chapter focuses on a lifestyle aspect (nutrition, exercise, sleep, social media) and how it interacts with your brain and affects your health. The level of research she brings to each is insightful (particularly with regards to the gut and inflammation) and I’m amazed at how many symptoms I experienced now make perfect sense after reading. Each chapter is also combined with a wealth of practical considerations that you can make to try and improve your mental health. I found them to be always relevant, to the point and backed up by research and experience. My favourite chapters were on psychological resilience and the importance of sleep. I’m positive you will recognise many of the symptoms described by Wilson and be able to apply some of the advice she offers to your own lifestyle. A highly recommended read.

Enjoyed this book, very good overview and highlighting some things that have caused me to change some of my existing lifestyle habits. I’ve been reading more about alcohol and its harms on the body and this helped me to understand more it’s impact on the mind too.
All round a good read if you’re interested in the topic.

There is a lot of what most educated people know about the basics of Depression and how to feed it in this book, there wasn’t a lot extra to learn. But I bought it as a gift and my partner was happy to read it.

I read “How to build a healthy brain” in just a few sittings, I didn’t want to put it down! I have now gone back to the beginning to read it more thoroughly with a pencil & highlighter – this book is a goldmine & an outstanding debut.
I am really enjoying learning about small achievable steps which I can take to best protect the health of my brain & optimise its function both now & for the future.
I suffer from a number of mental health conditions and this book is educating me about ways by which I can improve my mental health eg through nutrition and exercise. Kimberley breaks down which foods are helpful for what functions of the brain & also suggests how you can incorporate these foods into your meals. All of this in a completely non-judgemental manner.
Therapy remains a taboo topic & another standout feature of this book is how Kimberley successfully demystifies therapy highlighting the role which it can play in building a healthy brain. One of my favourite quotes comes from this section where Kimberley states that “therapy is non-invasive brain surgery”. Therapy is really difficult to describe & this for me is a brilliant description!
This book is well researched and 100% evidence-based, proving to me that I can trust what Kimberley writes. “How to build a healthy brain” is packed full of interesting & helpful information about science, nutrition, psychology & much more. Kimberley explains everything in an easy to understand way without being patronising, an approach which is another standout feature of her book. There’s no need to have a degree or anything to be able to read this!
Reading “How to build a healthy brain” has inspired me. It has left me encouraged, educated and excited about how I can take control of my brain health, knowing that my actions now will as Kimberley puts it “future-proof my brain”.
I highly recommend this five star book as a must read for everyone!

I read the sample portion on a whim and decided to buy the book afterwards- which I ended up reading in one sitting. It’s easy to read, has lots of useful information that anyone can incorporate into their lives. Would recommend for anyone suffering with depression, anxiety or looking to make health changes esp in terms of brain health.
