How to Feel Better: Practical ways to recover well from illness and injury

£3.80

HIGHLY COMMENDED (POPULAR MEDICINE) AT THE BRITISH MEDICAL ASSOCIATION’S BOOK AWARDS 2014

In days gone by, people understood that a knock to your health takes its toll on your emotions, your relationships, your morale, your ‘spirit’. But these days, we think that if the doctor has waved you off, then you are ‘better’. We neglect what scientific studies show is a vital element of recovery: the emotional side of getting better. As a result, many of us struggle with hidden issues such as depression, stress and anxiety long after a health crisis. This new book, from the authors of The Cancer Survivor’s Companion (highly commended by the BMA and winner of the Guild of Health Writers’ Best Health Book 2012) centres on the crucial, research-based (but widely overlooked) truth that ‘getting better’ is not just about the body – emotions play a huge part. Often, a person’s emotional state is the one thing stopping them from a full recovery.

Contents include: Why getting better takes time; why relaxation and exercise are both vital; how to build your confidence and tackle low mood and depression; how to eat for recovery; how to deal with medical advice and communicate well with your doctor; how to keep family life and relationships on track and much more. There are also case histories to inspire readers as well as fascinating snippets from times gone by which help to make this an entertaining as well as a highly practical, inspiring read.

How to Feel Better offers the best, practical advice for people recovering from illness and also includes extremely helpful suggestions for carers and families. My husband has been struggling to recover from catastrophic complications following major cancer surgery and he feels this book was written especially for him as he sees himself on every page. This book should be given to every patient as they leave intensive care as a guide to getting through the post traumatic stress syndrome (now clinically recognised as a very real complication of patients who spend long periods in ICU). The aftermath of illness, trauma, injury and accident can have devastating consequences on confidence, self-esteem and how people perceive their future. This book is a self-help guide to demystify the vagaries of recovery and it implements wonderful coping strategies to help everyone move on and get on with their life. It is a book that you can dip in and out of whenever you have a need and has been so well researched that it encompasses so many of the conditions and anxieties that follow illness with excellent coping strategies. Perhaps this book should also be on the shelf in every doctor’s office or surgery and should definitely be on every medical student’s reading list! Well done Frances and Lucy for writing such a practical, easy to read and informative book. It is already helping Russ and our family to come to terms with our changed lives and that our future, although very different, can be just as fulfilling as it was before illness struck.

Unlike many self help books, this is a straight talking book of huge sensitivity and usefulness. Real life examples help the reader relate to actual recoveries and the language is so clear, friendly and conversational without verging on the casual.
I would recommend this to anyone, not only those recovering from an illness. One never knows when the advice will come in handy.

A very good book giving practical advice on the emotional side of dealing with illness. Very often, after recovery from an illness or an operation, you are expected to carry on as usual. This isn’t always easy as the illness has had an emotional impact in addition to the physical one and this impact is not so easily understood by friends and family. The book gives practical solutions on how to cope with the emotional aftermath and also
gives advice to carers as they too suffer from emotional side effects and stress.

Great book. As someone else said in the book … wished I had this when leaving hospital. Helps so much with my mysterious condition which the medics do not talk about. Confirmed my approach to coping is about right so overall very reassuring Quotes what my friends say .. You look all right!

I loaned from the library and have now purchased for reference. I read on
