A Sewing Course in a Book
If you have just started to sew, this book has been designed for you. Learning to sew can be both frustrating and rewarding, so you want a book that will start slowly, build your confidence and help you avoid common problems. Designed as a thorough sewing course, How To Start Sewing will walk you through the entire sewing process, from your first hand sewing stitches to your first complete garment. You don’t even need to have a sewing machine to start learning. Just like having a sewing teacher in your own home or studio, let us show you how to choose and use your first sewing machine, troubleshoot your way through common sewing issues and build your sewing confidence. Go easy on your budget by buying new equipment and materials only as you need it, then put your new supplies and skills to use in hands-on exercises. Don’t let the large size of this book intimidate you; everything is explained in straightforward language with practical examples. No prior experience required.
Practical Sewing Exercises with Patterns to Match
It’s frustrating trying to sew a new detail when your pattern doesn’t match the instructions. So inside this book you’ll find a whole library of small sewing patterns. Trace off the patterns, cut them out in fabric and follow the step-by-step exercises to sew seams, darts, pockets, zippers, vents, and plackets. Then you can create a reference folder full of your favourite techniques. Next time you forget how to sew the lining for an invisible zipper, or how to adjust the tension on your overlocker, you will have your test sample there to remind you. This pattern library is also the perfect reference for when you are pattern cutting your own patterns or amending sewing patterns.
Sew Like a Professional
Professional sewing machinists know where to invest their time and effort to get the best results and you can learn the construction principles at work and achieve a finish worthy of high-end ready-to-wear too. This book focuses on the most versatile garment details used in womenswear and menswear collections for you to apply to your own designs.
Designed for Different Types of Sewers
If you are a perfectionist, this book will suit your pragmatic desire to know everything about the how and why of sewing and build your skills and knowledge in a specific order. Or if you prefer to make mistakes first, and then ask questions later then we are here for you too. Just use our troubleshooting guides to tell you why you keep breaking needles and tangling your thread so you can quickly solve your issues and plough through your first projects. The sooner you start making mistakes, the sooner we can help you fix them.

Super impressed with this book and there are oh so many sewing books out there for the beginner, but I have to say, just buy this one!
Every question you thought was silly and couldn’t find in other sewing books….well this one has it.
Right from the very first process of starting to sew, this books explains everything in good detail, but simple enough with great diagrams to follow.
It also has exercises throughout the book with patterns for sample sewing exercises (not garments) in the back. So you can use this book as a sewing course if thats what you wish.
As a sewer who is self-taught, this is the book I wished I had picked up first. Down to knowing which scissors/pins/ machine to buy. The real specifics you want to know.
I loved that as a sewer of garments for a few years now, that this book still has plenty to teach me, even if it gets used as a reference guide after a few more years. I can not recommend this book enough and it is worth all the pennies and a 6 star rating if I could give it.
Oh….and its a big, thick book by the way!

Being new to sewing this book as taught me a lot. I haven’t finished the book yet but already I can work a sewing machine and I understand the concept of a garment. it also has exercises to complete which has helped to get a better understanding rather than reading a whole chapter and not understanding. I would highly highly recommend this book for anyone starting out in sewing this book is just perfect.

10 our of 5 stars. It’s a complete course. Can’t say enough good things. Start to finish, well laid out, lots of diagrams, lists of what to purchase as you go through. It’s a thick book. If you’re looking to learn about sewing this is the book.

I love this book????????????????!!!. It’s so informative and the best thing about it for me is that it doesn’t just tell you WHAT to do, it tells you WHY to do it which is invaluable and have never found another book that does that. Believe me I’ve searched! It goes through everything logically and step by step. I’m over half way through the book and havent come across an exercise I couldn’t complete and to a good standard and that’s because the book is so well written. He diagrams although in black and white, are soooo clear. Perfect. Dont get me wrong, it can be a bit heavy going because it’s a thick book in black and white but it’s all there in one volume and you learn so much. It’s been so well put together, they know what they’re talking about. The book hasnt fallen apart yet and am thoroughly impressed. I just take my time, read through the exercise and visualise doing it in my mind first and this helps sooo much when you actually come to sewing the sample. Less mistakes. I wish they taught this when I was at school. They should make this book part of the national curriculum. I’ve got a nice folder of samples and have been using this book for over a year, making my way through it when I have time. It’s nice to look back and think “did lil ole me do that? ” because it looks so complicated. A real confidence booster. Cant recommend this book enough. An absolute bargain for what you get. Best book on learning to sew ever!

As a single parent father with three children
I know the necessity of teaching g my children how to look after themselves.
This book is not only giving them very useful skills in self-sufficiency but taking us all to far higher more professional standards.

This will appeal to the man, like myself, who doesn’t know the first things about sewing. The book has an almost ‘car maintenance manual’ feel to it, with no colourful, frilly pictures. Just the information you need in simple black and white drawings. Bought it mainly as a basic introduction to hand sewing buttons and very simple hand sewn repairs. I have eight high quality overcoats, All destined for button changes from plastic to dull horn. A ‘good’ tailor (not a dry cleaner) would charge a minimum of £50 a coat. Plan on practising for some time before I go at those coats.
This book makes me consider a sewing machine. Never thought I’d say that.

I would almost call this the only book you’d ever need, except I know myself and I know I will end up buying more books, perhaps more advance ones once I finish this.
Honestly, if you are a beginner sewer, this *is* the only book you’ll need for a good long while. It decomplicates the sewing process to the extent it feels doable even for someone without any experience at all. Teaches all the basics, not just the how, but also the why. Teaches everything from hand sewing to domestic sewing machines and even industrial sewing machines. Teaches pattern cutting, pattern making, so many things! It will get you from knowing nothing to cutting and sewing your first garment and probably beyond too.
