How to Survive Your First Year in Teaching: Sue Cowley’s bestselling guide for new teachers
£3.20
The NQT year is notoriously difficult and hard work. Challenges include meeting your new colleagues and making the right first impression, preparing and planning your lessons, managing the mountain of marking and most scary of all . . . being in charge of a whole class by yourself for the first time!
But don’t panic – help is at hand from expert teacher and education writer Sue Cowley. In this new edition of her bestselling book, she supports new teachers through the stresses and strains, and the highs and lows of their first year in teaching.
She’s there to guide you right from the start of day one, lesson one, with the acknowledgement that ‘your stomach feels like lead and your mouth feels as dry as the Sahara desert’. She’s there through each term advising on time-saving lesson plans, easy to implement behavior management tips and how to help children who have special educational needs. She’s there right until the end of the year when she ensures that you feel triumphantly on top of report writing and your first parents’ evening. All of her methods are tried-and-tested and real life case studies exemplify how (and how not) to put them in to practice.
This new edition has been fully updated with new diagrams and checklists to boost your organisational and time management skills. It also includes refreshed and up-to-date case studies and extra examples for primary school teachers.
Written in Sue Cowley’s honest, accessible and down to earth style, How to Survive your First Year in Teaching is a must have for all new teachers embarking on their NQT year.

A helpful insight.

Will be starting my NQT year and found this book very straight-forward and easy to read. There is lots of useful advice about how to survive as a teacher using effective planning, marking and behaviour management. There are many things my training year mentors never said to me but that I will be doing next year! Would definitely recommend.

I got this book to help me prepare for the second time I applied to become a teacher in Scotland. It not only gave me the tips and knowledge I was seeking for, but it also filled me with joy at reading what teacher’s life is about.
Fair to say I got a place in university and I’m sure I’ll be looking through my notes and going back to this book once my first year begins.

A mix of helpful things and obvious things. Because it’s written to both primary and secondary it can be a bit vague at times and there’s always going to be stuff that isn’t relevant to everyone. If you have no experience in schools this might be valuable, but even with only one year in a school I’d realised I’d picked up quite a lot of these things intuitively. Nothing beats real life experience!

Love this book! I’m in my final year as a trainee teacher and thought I’d buy this after seeing it in a library and it has been worth the buy! It has helped me set up for my final placement to get that outstanding grade and prepared me for teaching beyond uni! Well done Sue you’ve been a great help putting advice all in one place!

I bought this book for my friend who is currently undertaking teacher training. I had a little read of it myself before I gave it her, and although I won’t find it useful myself, I can see how teachers would. It was extremely informative and not patronising, and even made me laugh in places. It is set out well, and I like to think that it could be taken into the classroom as an emergency guide! My friend loves it, and I think it would make a good present for any teacher-to-be or NQT.

I could NOT put this book down! This is a fantastic book to read before you start your NQT year – I feel I have been given a boost of confidence to to start in September!. I had looked around for a book that would give me support and advice in a light-hearted way and this was just that! Each chapter was important and I found myself highlighting/noting words of wisdom which has helped me design my classroom rules, expectations and my first lesson. There is a fantastic section on marking with a lot of advice on when and how to do it – a section worth reading over 2 or 3 times. In addition to this the ‘Parents’ chapter is also an excellent chapter guiding you through the different types of ‘parents’ you could be faced with and how to overcome difficult situations and confrontation if that were to be the case. This is definitely a book I would recommend to all NQT’s!

As i’m about to start my first year of teaching in September, this book has been very helpful in easing my worries. It is very simple to follow and has chapter headings if you want to skip to specific sections. The book was delivered very fast in very good condition. I was recommended this book by a friend and would very much recommend it to anyone who is starting a career in teaching.
