Brilliantly whimsical yet oddly informative, TheOatmeal.com is an entertainment site full of comics, quizzes, and stories. Matthew Inman, creator of TheOatmeal.com, is a king of all trades when it comes to the Web. He writes, draws, and codes everything on the site, and his viral marketing skills make the site a huge success. How to Tell If Your Cat Is Plotting to Kill Youis a very funny, creative selection of comics, facts, and instructional guides, which all stem from the creative wonderland at TheOatmeal.com.
The book will be designed to create suspense/anticipation with page turns analogous to the experience of scrolling down through the panels on the website. For example, “Cat vs. Internet” will use page turns to draw out the reader’s anticipation of what the crafty kitty might do next to get attention from his Internet-fixated owner. Other favourite cat comics include “How to Pet a Kitty,” “The Bobcats,” and “17 Things Worth Knowing About Your Cat.” A pull-out poster will be included at the back of the book.

Book arrived a couple of days ago, swung by to see how it was doing (OK, a bit fanboi-ish) and was shocked with that single 3/5 review (see above, until amazon de-sorts).
Unfortunately after reading it, I found myself nodding along and can’t quite bring myself to demand a mandatory 5/5 from everybody and that first reviewer is banned from amazon forever.
Starting with the positives – this book made me laugh (like properly laugh, in a way I had to explain to my wife) for a good half hour. If you like The Oatmeal and Cats, you will love it (as it’s based on the fact that your cat is an ego-centric-narcissist who’s merely weighing up the nutrional value of it’s bowl + potential refills vs that of your sleeping body).
On the down-side, most of the cartoons are available online and have already been seen by those that religiously follow Inman’s output. Plus, and I’m forcing myself to type this, the book-only items strike me as just a teensy bit less-funny – I won’t say ‘filler’, but.. well..
In conclusion:
The cartoons are great, look fantastic and this is genuinely the perfect gift for any cat owner who doesn’t completely believe that Tiddles is their bestest friend in the world devoid of ulterior motive. Additionally there’s definitely a greater impact of some of the cartoons you’ve seen before when each cell is presented on its own page (e.g. cat trying to get attention as you sit at your PC).
The book’s something you can enjoy yourself as a fan and perfect to recruit others to The Oatmeal by forcing the content upon them in a palatable paper-based form.
