Jessica ‘Jay’ Wells seemingly has it all – husband Tom, great kids, and a high-flying career as a defence lawyer – until one day Tom confesses something to her, and everything she values is threatened forever.
Edward Blake has been accused of murdering his wife in their home. Jay believes his innocence and takes up his case, investigating other potential suspects, witnesses and alibis, all while facing an unravelling private life.
This is a story about trust. There are secrets everywhere across both families in this book, but as the investigation into the murder begins so they came spilling out. Much of this story is about who is telling the truth, and for Jay – who can she trust.
My thoughts:
This was the first Susan Lewis book I have read. Crime isn’t a genre I often go for but every now and then one finds its way onto my book pile, and this one didn’t seem too complicated or full of criminal and legal technicalities – something which I find a bit like wading through treacle at times.
The two main characters I found likeable, and I was rooting for them both throughout the book, however, I wasn’t always sure about Jay’s actions around her unravelling relationship with her husband and their marriage, and in the last part of the book she didn’t quite ring true for me. It felt a bit contrived and out of character, and I thought the ending, which I had guessed from early on, could have been wrapped up much sooner, I found myself just waiting to find out how rather than who.
It’s difficult to say too much about Edward Blake’s character without spoilers but although I sympathised with him I couldn’t quite get to grips with his relationship with his murdered wife Vanessa and her personality, and therefore his loyalty to her.
I found the writing easy and readable, and the periphery characters were developed enough to add to the plot without tangling up the twists and turns.
Overall, despite the last section, I enjoyed this book and give it 4 stars. It was interesting and kept me reading on. I will definitely look at more from this author.

Genuine question here, is this a brand new story or a reworked older one? because I kept on getting the sense I’d read it before. I read it all and enjoyed it, but it felt familiar, so if its new its very like something else i have read in the past.
The only bad part is the one sentence, that had no relevance to the story, and was completely unnecessary, referencing the covid pandemic. This is fiction it doesn’t need to be dated. And it surely doesn’t need unnecessary, irrelevant references, just for the hell of it. And as a reader it spoils the whole book. Its not the first time, clearly this author is a good obedient, government propaganda fan. we’ll no doubt be getting climate change hints in future books! I think thats it for me, i like Susan Lewis as an author, I’ve read most of her books, but I do not want to be propaganda-ed when I’m reading for relaxation. And its now 2 or 3 books. enough is enough.

Cleverly constructed plot, convincingly written. The central character is rather unattractive, which undermines reader involvement.

At first, I thought I had figured out what it was all about but as I flipped over the pages, I became totally oblivious of what’s gonna happen in the following chapter. I got glued to these bittersweet story till I read the last word. Thanks Susan for this wonderful gift

A captivating story of love, betrayal and redemption – well, almost.
I’m not the sort of reviewer who gives a synopsis of the story. I like to offer my thoughts and views on the story and characters. This was a great story. Maybe not a new one but told with passion, emotion, love, dismay. I felt for the three characters in how their stories mingled together understanding the anger, anguish and love felt by them.
This is the only book I’ve read by Susan Lewis but I’ll be finding out if she’s written any others as this is a writer who knows how to weave a story together so beautifully.

Susan Lewis has produced a cracking novel that moves along at a crisp pace with unexpected twists and turns. Better than an ‘on screen’ TV drama it had me captivated from start to finish. Highly recommended.
