iMac For Dummies (8th Edition)
I have been a dedicated Windows user since 1997 and in 2013 bought an 11” MacAir for travel. It currently runs OS-X Mavericks.
I have just purchased a 27” iMac 5K Retina ( to link to the Mac Air) and bought this book to help me understand the Mac Way. However my new Mac is running OS-X Yosemite
1st problem – . This book ( mid 2014) is relevant to iMac’s running the system OS-X Mavericks.
Apple , like Microsoft appears to be changing it’s operating system every year – particularly integrating with its IOS products iPhones and iPads
Apple , since mid 2015 , have changed to an updated system – OS-X Yosemite – and their software suite iLife has also changed – out went iPhoto ( and Aperture) and in came “ Photos” so beware which operating system you have before committing to buy ( Note there is a new book “My iMac” , published by QUE , which covers the iMac with Yosemite ( but has NOTHING on iLife range of software – see my separate review of this book)).
So judging as this a book for an iMac running Mavericks , this book will help ( or infuriate) certain readers as it has a very American “ chatty” style. (Some people love/hate the Dummies books anyway) .It has the usual useful “Dummies Cheat Sheet –( available online) which gives most of the “Mac key keystroke shortcuts”
Content – Yes , it DOES deliver what is claimed in the marketing blurb and also gives a good introduction to the iLife range of products.
I am not going to repeat the full contents listing given on Amazon page .(The product suits me)
Relevance – So long as you have an iMac running Mavericks – fine. The mechanical basics of the iMac ( wireless mouse , wireless keyboard ) haven’t changed , nor have most of the keystrokes nor the basic layout of the user screen (desktop).
So – (Very) good for iMacs running OS-X Mavericks – I rated this as 5 star BUT check which system you have first.
Also see if there is a 9th Edition of this book covering Yosemite if you have a Mac product post (ca) June 2015 with Yosemite already loaded.

Just what I needed as I have just switched to iMac from Windows and it is so very different. I don’t mind admitting that when it comes to technology I really am a dummy so this book is perfect. It actually starts with the most basic of information which makes a nice change from the manuals which assume everyone is an expert. Would recommend it to anyone. The seller, Brit Books, sent it very quickly and it is in immaculate condition, for which I thank them.

These DUMMY books are informative but do not cover everything i.e. several computer manuals are required.

Between them the “for Dummies” and “The Missing Manual” series cover the needs of the appropriate novice extremely well’ Every now and then though, neither deals with what you want at that moment but that’s life!

It does what it says on the cover. this book you judge it by the cover

A little disappointed as for a dummy hence the purchase it did not say which version of OSX it covers until you get it that is – beware check first otherwise does the basics if you have never bothered to use a Mac before. Great introduction time to move on.

Very helpful for someone with 40 years experience of Windows who is now hoping to use Apple for production of videos. The author has managed to understand the moves that an ordinary punter would want to make and not only explain them but provide the keyboard shortcuts that simplify the whole experience. It is the speed of Apple that is astounding and this book is one that will provide a reference point for many months or years to come (d.v.). I have not looked at any other books so can’t compare them. I assume that they all major on one aspect of the experience that is Apple computing be it theory or practice driven by intuition or graphic instruction. The only problems I had with the book were firstly, that the screen dumps were very dark and the information difficult to decipher and secondly, that iPhoto has now been superseded by ‘Photos’. These were a minor issues however and did not impinge on the pleasure of using the book to help the changeover from Windows to Apple.

Although quite expensive, the book has been very helpful.
Also, an excellent reference over a wide range of i-topics.
I would recommend it to anyone like me, new to the iMac.
