It moves to slowly. Too many similar exercises. I guess that means you can publish another volume….which we have to pay for. Professional experienced music teacher

I had been struggling and slowly improving with sightreding for years before deciding to go back to basics with this. I wouldn’t hesitate at starting at this grade 1 book – even if you fee you’re above it – because it really hammers in the fundamentals and gets you focusing on the expression markings and dynamics early on. Good learning curve – steep at times but not frustratingly so. Don’t waste your time with apps and websites. This is an effective and cheap resource

Great book recommended by my piano teacher. I’m an adult learner and have no intention of taking any exams, but it is helping with my sight reading of the bass clef, which was my nemesis! Some of it is a bit basic if you already know how to read music, but you can always find an exercise to suit you.

Worked through the first book in two weeks and just spent three weeks on book 2. Now excited to start book 3. I’ve enjoyed reading and playing everything. The difficulty is raised in such small increments that you will hardly notice. When you look back and compare you see how much you improved. Its all really well put together and the pieces are varied and usually fun to play. I get them up to at least 100 bpm (I use an Android Metronome App) and then tick them off. I record them using Mixcraft 8.1 so I can play back what I’ve done and improve where needed. IMO you will need a piano with weighted keys – I use a Yamaha P-35 and a Clavinova 950 for the performance directions to put character into the pieces. I feel like I’m in good hands with these books. Highly Recommended.

Steady increase to the level of difficulty. Would have liked more Italian terms on the dynamics so as to get pupils used to them.

I don’t normally write reviews of products bought on Amazon, but these books are so good, I am compelled to share my experience to help others. I am an experienced musician and I have played and taught guitar for over 40 years. I have played many gigs over the years on guitar, for audiences exceeding 1000 etc. With my good knowledge and love of music, I decided to learn piano. I wanted to go back to the beginning, train properly and to take the ABRSM grade exams. On Piano, I have always struggled with sight reading, so I wanted to go back to the very start and learn from scratch. My fantastic piano teacher recommended this series of books. I have tried many different sight reading books over the years and most of them are not very good. Trust me, these books are brilliant. I bought the Pre grade 1 book and grade 1 then 2 etc. Work through the exercises in turn, following the instructions. The gradual grading of difficulty is just right. Play each exercise several times until you play it correctly, then move on. My sight reading is progressing better than I ever expected. These books are like cracking a code…they work. Well done to the Author, Paul Harris, who explains and coaches sight reading so clearly. Paul, you have succeeded where many, many others have failed. These are the only piano sight reading books to buy. Good luck to all, I hope this review helps you.

Only 3* because in my opinion this book could be improved. I am teaching myself to play an instrument without the help of a teacher. Therefore I was quite surprised to find that this book, being the 1st in the series, DID NOT, explain what the notes actually were when placed on the stave. An improvement would be to show all the notes on a stave together with the corresponding letter of the musical alphabet. Even if it was just an explanation at the beginning of the book, it would certainly help those who are trying to learn by themselves. It is NOT FAIR, to assume that a student should know these facts. Other than this, the book appears to be a good learning aid. Oh, and I very rarely give 5* as most things are certainly not perfect, only very good for purpose.

I bought this for my son along with the ABRSM Grade 1 Sight Reading book and, although its quite different, I liked it and think its complements it well. It is set out in stages and each stage introduces or practises a different element. This works well as you get a chance to become really familiar with one aspect before moving on. My only criticism is that the book assumes some degree of musical knowledge ora music teacher nearby! Although there are notes at the start of each section which make most points simple, some things like accents and staccatos are introduced but not explained, which meant I had to find out about these separately.Would still recommend to anyone wanting to practise sight reading.
