A fantastic series – I wouldn’t be without it for all of my piano students. My only criticism is that I would like more exercises for the higher grades. I’m also missing the ‘Perfect your sight-reading!’ books, which seem to be out of print. They are super extension work, which is especially important in the higher grades when more practice is required.

I got this book *after* I’d passed my grade IV exam, as somehow I’d missed getting it before. But I bought it anyway because my sight reading isn’t good and despite getting through the exam with a merit, this is one area that needs a lot of work. And I wouldn’t say I’m finding it easy, but but it’s nice to have SR pieces that I can cope with without too much hassle; I mix up using this book with my Grade V material. The Paul Harris books are great, I’d always recommend them.

I love this series of books by Paul Harris and use them with all my students these days (I’m a teacher). They build confidence and ability which most sightreading books fail to do. They do this by starting out at an easy level, having rhythmic themes for most chapters, and never over-facing the student with huge great passages. It’s so simple that I get students to do two at home each week as well.
Over the weeks and months, the pianist gets better and better and by the time the book is finished they are truly able to sightread at the desired level. Simple as.

At this grade of ABRSM it is possible for learners to become discouraged with the difficulties to be found in sight reading. This book should be most useful as part of a balanced attempt to improve skills. The examples are excellent and well thought out. Rhythmic and melodic exercises are designed to offer maximum help. The music is sufficient to develop good technical skills and encourage sympathetic performance in order to speed up the learning of new music. The book does not tire with repeated use. This is a great resource.
