Some wars rage forever.

It all started harmlessly enough. An egged window. A deflated car tyre. A few garden gnomes knocked over. But then, the silent calls began – late nights and early mornings, to landlines, and mobiles, and to numbers that no one should have access to.

At their wits’ end, three former British Army soldiers, now living in the Highlands of Scotland, have no choice but to turn to the police for help.

And that is when the killing starts.

Brought in to lead the case, Detective Chief Inspector Jack Logan finds himself locked in a battle of wits with a meticulously organised murderer.

A murderer who has been planning all this for a very long time…

In Service of Death is the seventeenth book in the multi-million selling DCI Jack Logan Scottish crime fiction series by author, JD Kirk. Perfect for fans of Ian Rankin, Chris Brookmyre, and Stuart Macbride.

Well done; better for the inclusion of Hoon. And, surprise ending, one you’ll never see coming. And the things Hoon finds to say? Total fun!

Another impressive outing for DCI Jack Logan. JD Kirk really knows how to take the reader on a rollercoaster of a ride with his well drawn and realised characters.
There’s action and humour aplenty, as always plus a fantastic story you’ll be totally sucked in to.

If you’re a fan of a modern Scottish police procedural that’s gritty, violent but also funny and heart warming you’ll love the Jack Logan series. Highly recommended.

Great read, as always. Never disappoints.
I love reading about murders and these characters while having a laugh.
I’d love to read also more Bob Hoon solo stories, it’s great having him appear in this series.

In Service Of Death by JD Kirk is a crime thriller and is the seventeenth book in the DCI Logan series.

This was a return to a darker style story than some of the recent outings for Logan and his team. Mixed with the usual great underlying character storylines and a strong mix of humour, this is a true JD Kirk story at its best.

Every time I pick up a book by JD Kirk I know what to expect and he never fails to deliver which is why he has remained my favourite crime author since book one.

In Service of Death Jack and his team investigate after the body of a woman is found in the bedroom of her home. The person they are looking for seems to be after revenge against the husband, their neighbour, and a previous friend who has gone missing. The three men were in the armed forces together and there appears to be a dark secret between them and it’s now catching up with them. As the story unfolds things become much darker putting the lives of some of Jack’s team at risk. By the end of the book you have gone through many twists and turns with many you won’t expect along with a character involvement you won’t see coming.

This has been one of my favourite books in a while for the series which will sound strange given I love them all. My favourite part of this book was, just as things get darker, Hoon comes into the story bringing with him a hard dose of humour and profanities that shouldn’t work well mixed with dark themes but as always he brings to the book only that which Hoon can. I also enjoyed the reintroduction of an earlier character and look forward to seeing what they bring to future stories.

After the last book, I was afraid the team would be torn apart! I was so glad to see this new book and it was a fabulous read! This series is best if read in order but even as a stand alone this book was fun! The characters are my friends and I love spending time with them! The plot kept me in suspense and I never guessed the ending! The humorous exchanges often made me laugh out loud. Enjoy!
I highly recommend this book and the whole series!

Ich meine gut, ich liebe DCI Jack Logan. Es ist nicht zu leugnen. Harte Schale, weicher Kern.

I’d read all the previous books and always enjoyed them. My husband usually reads them as soon as they come out then I’m never usually far behind. This is number 17, with 18 wrapped up under the tree for a Christmas present, then 19 due in April. Who knew a series could be as successful for this long?
There are 375 pages split into 43 chapters – why change a formula when it works?!
This series is so strong because of the characters and their development – individually and as a team. Of course, the murder is important but it is a definite aside from the people.
I was nearly 100 pages in when I glanced at the blurb on the back and I recognised almost nothing about the story I was reading – unfortunately there are clues about what is going to happen much further into the novel which really isn’t good.
For these novels you have to set your expectations that you will be entertained and you will be – look for a plausible police procedural and you will be disappointed.
There are some interesting differences detailed between the work of the uniformed officers and the investigation team and it’ the strength of their co-operation that seems to win through.
Often the narrative becomes informal and light but quickly shifts when there are more serious topics to cover. This gives a good balance to the entertaining romp.
The chapters quickly settle into the usual alternating pattern. We follow Logan for a while, then another character, then back to Logan and so on. It’s a gentle way to encourage the reader to carry on – a popular theme in crime novels and works well.
Delightfully, Hoon turns up (love him when he appears in the Logan novels but he was too much when he had a whole story to himself). Unfortunately it is in the most ridiculous circumstances – again, you have to forget any thoughts of plausibility and just enjoy the entertainment.

This was the best book so far. 11/10.
I love a happy ending, and ALL loose ends tied up. (I hope!!)

I recommend this book to absolutely anyone. If they enjoy a Crime Thriller they will enjoy this one ; I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was a bit worried about Tyler in case he killed him but no _ he didn’t . You will have to read the book to find out about the ‘he’.
Tormenting aren’t I ? But it will enjoy it you really will. Bob makes an appearance again and he is just as funny as ever ! I just did not want the book to end but it did and I was pleased to find Logan a little closer to the dog Taggart ! He almost cried when he was going to throw him over the drop.
