This was a lovely book to receive and my daughter’s first novel of this kind. A great introduction to this fantasy world and the description in these books really sucked her in. I believe she also learnt a lot from this boo.in terms of how well language can be used to set the scene which correlated well with what she was doing at school so it’s a great example to use. A great adventure and an exciting read with promise of more to come.

In the story of the book, we follow Ysolda’s adventures as she searches for her missing sister, Hari, and at the same time we come across many different animals and their different relationship with humans, which was very interesting to me. Ysolda lived her life in the shadow of the wolf queen’s tyrannical rule until one day a mysterious earthquake shakes the land and she is forced to strike a bargain with the wolf queen herself, she soon finds herself embroiled in a quest for a magic more powerful – and more dangerous – than she could ever have imagined.
I really love Hargrave’s writing. In every book the description of the world and characters are so real and exciting. What impressed me here was the beautiful description of the lands, the animals and the people with their traditions . This is a beautifully immersive story that makes the setting and world-building really tangible.
I’ve always liked books where there are related characters and animals and here we have our hero Ysolda with her loyal hawk Nara. The story in the book is very interesting, and the development of the mc is amazing. But the only thing I didn’t like was that at times there were too real descriptions of animals either in pain or unfortunately died. It was pretty hard for me to read it…
After all I really enjoyed the book and can’t wait for the next one.

I thought that In the Shadow of the Wolf Queen was so intriguing ,as always with Kira this really is really is an unmissable read. The world building, the characters, brilliant, complex, but not overwhelmingly so, this is epic fantasy at it’s best, full of adventure and quests. That ending will make you want to see where this is going without a doubt, five star read again, although more if I could
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Firstly, I have to say that this hardback book is beautiful. The cover beneath the dust jacket is stunning and completely mesmerising when it catches the light and becomes iridescent. It’s well worth opting for the hardback, in my opinion.
I don’t read a lot of fantasy so it took me a while to get into Ysolda’s world (depicted via a wonderful map on the endpapers) but once I did, I was completely immersed in the story. Ysolda and her sister Hari only have each other so when Hari is taken captive by the Wolf Queen, Ysolda is determined to rescue her…and so Ysolda’s adventure begins.
Kiran Millwood Hargrave writes so beautifully that I couldn’t put this book down. It may be aimed at readers between 9 and 11 years old, but I’m almost 50 and I loved it. It’s an epic fantasy adventure for readers of all ages and the start of an exciting new series. I can’t wait to continue Ysolda’s adventure.

I had this on pre-order and got the day of release. Its a lovely book, the covers of the hardback are embossed with silver wolves made of leaves, its quite stunning.
This is the story of Ysalda, she lives with her sister Hari in Glaw Wood. One day there is a terrible shaking and Ysaldas house falls into the ground and her sister goes missing. Ysalda follows the riders who have taken hari in the hopes of getting her back, but she is caught by them and taken to see Seren, the Wolf Queen.
The Queen enlists Ysaldas help to find an ancient forest with the hope that they can meet someone who can help them save the world.
I am in my 50’s and i loved this book. I read it over the course of 2 lazy weekend afternoons. It was fun and thrilling and i am looking forward to the next book to see what happens. There is the 1st chapter of the next book at the end of this book but i havent read it as i dont want to spoil the surprise.
Great read. Buy it!

A book that managed to b!end fast moving action with wonderful lush language. A delight for those who like fantasy with a real story tellers sensibility. When you finish a book and want to know what happens next is a sure test of a great story teller. There is an art to writing a story that can hold an audience spellbound and also make them feel they can sense the breath of a huge sea wolf on the back of their neck. Young adults and adults can both enjoy this book if they enjoy world building fantasy with a nod to the importance of trees and our stewardship of them. Perhaps eco fantasy is something we need to hear more of.
