“By far the best book on investing ever written.” — Warren Buffett
The classic text of Benjamin Graham’s seminal The Intelligent Investor has now been revised and annotated to update the timeless wisdom for today’s market conditions.
The greatest investment advisor of the twentieth century, Benjamin Graham, taught and inspired people worldwide. Graham’s philosophy of “value investing”—which shields investors from substantial error and teaches them to develop long-term strategies—has made The Intelligent Investor the stock market bible ever since its original publication in 1949.
Over the years, market developments have proven the wisdom of Graham’s strategies. While preserving the integrity of Graham’s original text, this revised edition includes updated commentary by noted financial journalist Jason Zweig, whose perspective incorporates the realities of today’s market, draws parallels between Graham’s examples and today’s financial headlines, and gives readers a more thorough understanding of how to apply Graham’s principles.
Vital and indispensable, this revised edition of The Intelligent Investor is the most important book you will ever read on how to reach your financial goals.

This book is often regarded as the Bible of Value Investing. After reading it I think it is true but I also have a few more things to say. As background, I have a Masters in Finance, my CFA and a couple years of industry experience. Given my background, I feel this book wasn’t as useful as people say just because I am very familiar with many of the concepts having studied them extensively. My friend who is a doctor and has no financial experience found the book very useful for example.
The second critique I would make is that this book was written a long time ago (1949) and was revised several times, most recently in 1971–72. Graham died in 1976. Commentaries and new footnotes were added to the fourth edition by Jason Zweig, and this new revision was published in 2003. Since Graham’s time finance has evolved a lot and many of the things he comments on don’t necessarily hold nowadays which may confuse certain readers (although they are pointed out by Zweig in the commentary). Having said this, I find the commentary chapters to be almost more useful than Graham initial thoughts.
To conclude, it is still a classic but perhaps less so for someone who already understand very well all these basic concepts. Some of the analysis though is extremely thorough and provides food for thought.

Benjamin Graham is the father of long term value investing. The man that Warren Buffet learned from. It’s worth reading as much as possible if you want to be a successful value investor and this book should be high up on your list. It’s a bit dated and I personally found a lot of the book too heavy, but it’s definitely worth reading.
