With determination to restore the universal language of realism in the visual arts, a group of fine artists and experts banded together to celebrate and propagate Contemporary Realism. They founded the Art Renewal Center in 1999. Since their genesis, this non-profit educational foundation has dedicated itself to encouraging rigorous skill-based training in the methods of the Old Masters, bestowing the title of ‘ARC Approved ‘ on ateliers who share their core values and demonstrate technical mastery.
The International ARC Salon Competition is the largest and most prestigious for realist based art in the USA, arguably the world, receiving this year over 3,750 entries from 69 countries. This year’s winners demonstrate the great breadth and originality that can be found in all facets of fine art. Categories include: Figurative, Portraiture, Imaginative Realism, Landscape, Animals, Sculpture, Drawing, Still Life, Plein Air and the Da Vinci Initiative Award for the Young Aspiring Artist.

This is the catalogue of shortlisted, finalist, and winning artworks competing in the 2018 ARC Salon. Anyone interested in realist (often confused with “realistic”) art ought to find this catalogue a fascinating reference for quality and a huge inspiration for ideas.
The catalogue is of superb print quality, being in full colour throughout. As a realist artist myself (one of the competition judges was a tutor of mine), I know a few of the artists featured, and have seen some of the paintings in person. I can therefore attest to the prints being very good approximations of the original artworks. It is great to see artists succeeding in such a demanding field of work, and for being a vital part of the revival of traditional fine art. It seems quite an expensive book, but you do get an awful lot of book for the money.

A large, heavy paperback production number, this is effectively the catalogue of paintings and sculpture from the 13th international ARC Salon, 2018.
The ARC is dedicated to upholding the traditions of 19th century Realism and is regarded in some quarters as reactionary, due to their total rejection of Modernism – though that doesn`t invalidate the work on show in these pages in the slightest; millions of artists continue to make art within recognised traditional aesthetics with skill and inspiration – and why shouldn’t they?
The book is packed with quality colour illustrations, the work organised by category; it is mostly painting, with a selection of sculptures and drawings. As with most big shows of this type there’s a mixed-bag of the truly serious, large statement works and the more personal, intimate pieces.
I was astonished to find two artists who worked in my own studio building some years ago included in the show.
A very good snapshot collection of the high-quality work that is still being made by dedicated artists without recourse to fashionable games or pandering to a self-interested, self-appointed high-art establishment aligned to the market.
