Introducing Islam: A Graphic Guide (Graphic Guides)

Islam is one of the world’s great monotheistic religions. Islamic culture, spanning 1,500 years, has produced some of the finest achievements of humanity. Yet the religion followed by a fifth of humankind is too often seen in the West in terms of fundamentalism, bigotry and violence- a perception that couldn’t be more wrong.
Introducing Islam recounts the history of Islam from the birth of Prophet Muhammad in the 6th century to its status as a global culture and political force today. Charting the achievements of Muslim civilisation, it explains the nature and message of the Qur’an, outlines the basic features of Islamic law, and assesses the impact of colonialism on Muslim societies.
Ziauddin Sardar and Zafar Abbas Malik show how Muslims everywhere are trying to live their faith and are shaping new Islamic ideas and ideals for a globalised world.

I LOVED IT SO MUCH AS I LOVE HISTORY AND IT HELP ME UNDERSTAND THE STRUGGLE OF ISLAM
by James Green
As someone with little knowledge of Islam I found this to be an interesting and informative book. Especially considering I’ve no real faith myself. I do find it bizarre the amount of reviews decrying this books “bias” and “accuracy” when you take into account is is merely an introduction, or a beginners guide. It’s here to give you a broad strokes outlook. Secondly I’d like to think we all have enough critical thinking skills to not just absorb everything wholesale and check what we’re unsure of. Finally (regarding the Bias) I found it to be fairly minimal. Yes, the books authors frequently talk up Islam as a faith. They also however frequently note how its been twisted and needs revitalising, how terrorists use it an excuse and how the Islamic community in the past let itself down. When it comes to western interactions and colonialism…well the facts are the facts and the west walked into other peoples countries, yelled “mine” and then waved guns at anyone who disagreed. There’s not much arguing there frankly.
Overall I’d say its an enjoyable read and certainly gives you a basic idea of Islam however it’s more for a historical view over a modern one.

few mistakes in the book

I wanted this book to read as an unbiased account of Islam as I’m interested in the history, the spiritual beliefs and the cultural sides of the faith. I will continue to read it but be very aware that night from the start, from the first page it is stated that ‘ Muhammad is the most influential man in history’. Of course this is not true unless you are a confirmed follower of Islam already. These types of statements put people off ……..so be careful if you’re after a balanced view.
