The Irish War of Independence which ended in July 1921 led directly to the agreement of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, an agreement that provided Ireland with a measure of independence. The Irish Free State was created, and Ireland was granted a level of autonomy it had not enjoyed for more than one hundred years.

However, the treaty contained a clause which was to divide Ireland, literally and politically. The six counties in the north which formed Ulster were allowed to opt-out and to remain a part of the United Kingdom. The island of Ireland became two separate countries for the first time—The Irish Free State in the south and west and Northern Ireland in the north. This division caused bitterness among many Irish people who had fought for independence. Some even viewed the signing of the treaty and the creation of a separate Northern Ireland as a betrayal of all they had fought for. Others accepted that the treaty was not perfect but saw the creation of the Free State as an important first step on the road to complete independence for Ireland.

In late June 1922, growing animosity between Pro and Anti-Treaty factions erupted into armed conflict in the center of Dublin. For the next ten months, the Irish Free State was wracked by a bitter, bloody, and brutal civil war between those who sought to protect the new government and those who wished to destroy it. This is the story of the Irish Civil War, its origins, and its consequences.

Ireland’s history is steeped in blood and the difficult birth of the nation was no exception.
This short exposition of the painful beginning of what became the Republic does a good job of making it clear why there remains so much intense emotion over the unfinished business that remains to this date.
All civil wars are complicated to explain, often consisting of small local actions rather than grand campaigns. This war was several layers of complications deep and fighting was sporadic but very nasty.
This is a good introduction to an especially complex period of Irish history.

This short little history of the Irish Civil War packs a lot of punch into a short space. In addition, it is very timely as 2022 marks the centenary celebrations of the Anglo Irish Treaty and the beginning of the Civil War. The biggest advantage of this little book is that it outlines the facts in a no nonsense way. It is short on interpretation and analysis but it was never intended to be an academic tome. It covers a very complex period of Irish history so much so that the first third of the book is needed to cover the background to the Civil War. My usual quibble with the Hourly History series is that no Bibliography is given which would assist further exploration of the topic. The same holds for this book so maybe the editors of Hourly History might listen to me some day 🙂

A very good read, about a tragic part in Ireland’s history, packed full of important information, but sadly very short.

This is a neat account of the Irish Civil War of a hundred years ago.
    It explains much.
    A worthwhile read.

This was a well written and well balanced account and a perfect introduction to anyone wishing to commence a more detailed analysis or just to acquire a broad understanding of a complex and chaotic period of Irish history. It takes no sides but simply informs the reader of the reasons and motives of both pro and anti Treaty forces. Whilst this might downplay the emotional impact of the savagery of the violence, it successfully avoids condemning or condoning the actions of either side.

I found this book informative. Giving good references for anyone who would like to learn and understand Ireland and the problems that have come from such a small but lovely island.

It could also be said that the more you read, the more you know, but also, the more confusing it can become.

    It’s definitely worth a read.

I enjoyed this book and felt that it was well written. However one of the major drivers to accept the Dominion/Free State option was to avoid conflict with the UVF – here was a battle-hardened military force made up of loyalist soldiers recently returned from WW1 trenches. Whilst the republicans could muster a force of about 30,000 , Ulster could easily provide 100,000 experienced soldiers. An attempt to absorb Ulster into a republic would have resulted in a blood bath – and set back Irish unity indefinitely.
