As a little boy, climbing through the lochs and mountains of Argyll with his Irish Setter Don, all James Herriot wanted to be was a ‘dog doctor’ so he could care for man’s best friend.
In this classic collection of stories, we are introduced to some of the dogs who won a special place in the country vet’s heart – from Tricki Woo, the little Pekinese suffering from ‘flop-butt’ to Clancy the dog who nobody would go near and Gyp, the sheepdog who only ever barked once in his life. They’re joined by lovable dogs of all breeds, shapes and sizes, celebrating the limitless affection and loyalty of our closest companions.
Filled with magical storytelling and from the treasured author of All Creatures Great and Small, James Herriot’s Dog Stories is told with his usual wit and human compassion – the perfect gift for dog-lovers everywhere.

A lovely book for dog lovers and countryside lovers alike. I have read most of James Herriot’s books and this collection of his dog stories contains some characters that I have already met but lots of new ones too.
Amusing, moving and I have a job to put it down!

Herriot is a truly exceptional author, and in my opinion every animal lover in Britain should read his works. This is another wonderful collection of stories, this time every chapter featuring dogs. Some are laugh-out-loud amusing, others bring tears to your eyes, but all are can’t-put-down readable. My only criticism of this particular book is that most of the tales have been taken from his other books, so if you already own his complete collection, you might not want to invest in these duplicates. Having said that, there are one or two additional stories, and he does add a page or two at the end of every chapter telling you a little bit more about the characters. I personally own every book he’s ever written, both in paperback and Kindle form, and I wasn’t going to miss out on this one – and I’m very glad I didn’t. Even if the stories are duplicates, they’re well-worth a second read. And if you’re lucky enough not to have read any Herriot stories yet, why not make this your first – you’ll find yourself well and truly addicted!

Read all of Herriot’s books of his life as a vet in the Yorkshire sales many times. They still make me laugh out loud. Can’t recommend this author enough.

I am not a big reader in fact the number of books that I have reached the end is we shall say is few. I was soon turning the pages with this one- my wife sent for it to keep me occupied while I had a few spare moments on holiday. I usually fall asleep and drop the book but this one is different- you seem to get involved,, The short stories make my sort of reading relatively easy and enjoyable…

Some great stories of dogs & their owners. Some happy, some sad. As having watched All creatures great & small over the years, couldn’t resist this book. When reading about an unwell dog it makes me think of my two Labradors, how I love them, how I’d feel if they were ill. A must for all dog lovers.

These are a collection of stories about dogs whom James Herriot encountered on his rounds as a vet. He writes very well, and brings all his characters to life – man and animal. I found it perfect bedtime reading, a story or two and I was comfy and comforted by the dogs and Herriot’s love of them, and had a wee laugh too.
