I love this recipe book and I have been using it for years. It has some family classics – stews, pies, soups that I make time and time again and they are always great. Proper, no-nonsense food from when Jamie first started out.
A really good book for a novice chef.
It has withstood some pretty rough treatment and although it is a bit splashed, the binding is still good.

This is my top favourite cookbook. I bought this one for a friend who is marrying a farmer – perfect for home-cooked, hearty, everyday dinner recipes. I cook loads of them, and have scaled up several to cook for 100+ people for an Alpha course I cater for. If you want a great family cookbook – this is it.

Came on time. Disappointing recipes.

This book is DULL. And because it’s Jamie, he messes around with The Classics when there’s no need to. We just want a decent recipe and foolproof methodology. This was when his do-gooding, preaching, patronising ways started. This Penguin livery version looks good on the shelf however. One for the interior designers……

This is actually the second copy of this book that I’ve bought, this being a Christmas present for my mum. The first copy is probably my favourite cookery book and certainly Jamie’s best to date. It’s written in his usual easy style but focusses on family favorites like home made burgers and a Tikka Massala from scratch which has become a regular in our house. It also has really good sections on quick fixes for those post-work teas (try the paprika steak wraps, the combination shouldn’t work but they are to die for!), salads and even the humble sandwich. If you were to buy just one Jamie book, I’d definitely make it this. Highly recommended.

I really like Jamie and this is my favorite book of his. His chat at the start of the book is both practical and down to earth. I love how he has his version of our top 10 dishes. When we try the recipes out they always turn out great.
I have just bought this book for as a gift for a novice cook and they loved it too.

I ordered this book despite some of the reviews which said it was disappointing and only for beginners…it is not your average cookery book but has a myriad of ideas (great if you get fed up cooking the same thing!), not just for recipes, but for every use – there is even a page of ideas for when you use a sandwich toaster! It is worthwhile having – whether a beginner or not – for the recipes, but also some of the other ideas and tips. Don’t be put off by the other reviews. It would be 5 stars if there were more pictures of completed recipes, but there is an abundance pictures so it isn’t too much of an issue….

I thought long and hard before writing this review since I treat celebrity chefs with a certain amount of suspicion. I find this a good book for anyone looking for a modern cuisine prepared with a minimum of fuss. Jamie’s book has a number of useful tips about ingredients and techniques which should help anyone looking for an easy attractive and healthy diet. The book is well written and well illustrated. My criticisms centre on details. I find some recipes have more ingredients than necessary to get almost the same effect, if one is aiming at a quick meal one does not wants to spend time looking for one or another ingredient not necessarily found in an average store cupboard. Also, it would be helpful if an author that seeks to promote seasonal ingredients could indicate which recipes are best suited to a particular season of the year. Although most vegetables and fruit are now available all the year round in supermarkets, it would be helpful to suggest when home grown produce might be available at farmers’ markets. Unfortunately, many modern people simply do not understand seasons. That apart, after careful reading I rate this as one of the better of Jamie’s books and I expect to make use of it in the kitchen rather than in an armchair.
