    Dated. Not a patch on his later books but there are some funny 90s pictures between the lacklustre recipes.

    bought this as a forty something divorced unexpectedly and needing to eat.. I’ve bought a few books since, but always revert to this as it actually has food in it I want to eat. normal food. some fancy stuff too but basic essentials that I and my son love.
    so much so that I bought a copy for my Son, and the son of a friend.
    its an easy to read, easy to follow style with nice pictures showing what it SHOULD look like 🙂

    Jamie shows just how easy it is TO COOK, and produces another fine cookbook…with a bold aim:

    ~ ‘Anyone Can Learn to Cook in 24 Hours’

    ???? ‘Dedicated to Marguerite Patten, one of the original Ministry of Food girls and, since those days, a national treasure and incredible food guru.’

    From the back cover:

    ???? ‘If you thought you could never learn how to cook, then believe me, take these recipes and their step-by-step pictures and within 24 hours you’ll be making some really delicious grub. Cooking good food from scratch is a basic skill and having it in your life can save you money, give you loads of enjoyment and put you, your family and your friends on track to a healthier life.
    Anyone can learn to cook.

    And once you’ve got the hang of it, why not teach your mates how to do it too. Go on, learn a recipe today ~ and PASS IT ON…’
    The front cover flap goes on to state in typical JO banter:

    ???? ‘This book is inspired by all the people I’ve met who thought they could never and would never learn how to cook. Of course, that kind of thinking is like a red rag to a bull to me, because I believe that simple home cooking is one of the most basic, primal skills that every single person on this planet should have in order to look after themselves, their families and their friends.
    So I’ve written this book to empower you (or the person you’re buying this for) to learn how to cook as easily and as quickly as possible. I’ve done this by picking a whole load of recipes that we all love to eat and giving you my easy versions of them…Whether you’re a reluctant beginner or a good cook who just appreciates simplicity, allow me and this book to help you cook some truly delicious, crowd-pleasing meals, LET’S DO IT!’

    The cover opens to 360 good quality shiny finish pages, split over main chapters:

    1. Twenty-minute meals
    2. Quick pasta
    3. Tasty stir-fries
    4. Easy curries
    5. Lovin’ salads
    6. Simple soups
    7. Homely mince
    8. Comforting stews
    9. Family roasts
    10. Delish veg
    11. Quick-cooking meat and fish
    12. Classic fish
    13. Kick-start breakfasts
    14. Sweet things

    …sandwiched between an introduction (that includes reference to the ‘Ministry of Food’), ‘essentials’, Jamie’s thanks’ pages and a concise index, the latter enhanced by illustrated dishes shown in bold & with a ‘V’ for vegetarian recipes.

    Each chapter opens in double-page spread format with relevant introductory text and a full page picture, followed by the recipes.

    Each recipe is clearly laid out with the majority over 2-pages, with step-by-step photography on one and the recipe on the other. Each opens with relevant text, the approximate time (if relevant), the number of servings, the list of ingredients and clear directions. The book is interspersed with 2-page spread introductions from the people featured in the Rotherham-based TV show.

    A taste of the recipes contained within:

    * Butterflied Steak Sarnie
    * Prawns and Avocado with an Old-School Marie Rose Sauce

    * Evolution Salads
    * Pea and Mint Soup
    * A Cracking Burger

    All-in-all, this is a good stand alone cookery book which covers a variety of easily prepared dishes progressing to the more complex but never the impossible. Beginners will be likely be pleasantly surprised by the non-fussy format, as will more experienced cooks.
    I found the ‘Easy Homemade Curry Pastes’ a very informative section as it is not an area I am particularly confident in, and the accompanying rice ideas were a useful extra, too.

    And…even Jamie is in to a bit of ‘cheating’, with:

    ♦ ‘Cheat’s Sponge Cake with Summer Berries and Cream

    If you need to make a cake fast, this is definitely the recipe for you, as there is no baking involved!
    Italian panettone cakes can be bought from most supermarkets and delis, and they usually come boxed up really nicely. If you end up with any leftover panettone, just wrap it in clingfilm and toast it next morning for breakfast ~ totally delicious.’

    So can we all commit to the Jamie Oliver ‘Pass it On Pledge’, as per page 15?
    Learn a recipe from each chapter of the book, teach it to two or more of family and/or friends…on the condition that they pledge to do the same’…in other words, perhaps, ‘Pyramid Cooking’?

    Only time will tell.
