I had my eye on this book for a long time, and I’m very pleased with it now I have it. The patterns are absolutely gorgeous and the instructions are very clear. I will be making lots of wonderful scarves and socks etc now.
It arrived quickly and in perfect condition.

The patterns are lovely – this is a book for more advanced knitters who want to use these charts as inspiration or to incorporate them into their own designs, there aren’t many full patterns for garments in the book. I think it’s strange that people complain about there only being charts and no written instructions – for patterns this complex charts are much easier to follow so you can see how the stitches should line up with those below. Would be madness to write all these charts out. That being said, the images in the Kindle edition are extremely poor quality, so it is hard to see the details of the samples in the photographs, and sometimes even hard to see exactly which stitch symbol is in a chart. It is also annoying to flip back and forth between the instructions for working the different stitches and the pattern itself. Really think more care could have gone into making this a more useable e-book.

I’m surprised all the reviews follow the same sort of format about lovely stitches but all charted designs. There is a lot more to say on a practical level.
This is a really heavy book and, from a practical level, it is hard to use. It does not lie flat, which drives me mad. Seriously, how can you use charts this complex when the book keeps closing? There is a brief explanation on how to read the charts but this should have been more prominent and comprehensive. You could even miss it and it makes a big difference e.g. the charts are always written from the point of view of the right side, even if the row you are knitting is the wrong side! Another major difference is that the bobbles in each pattern, and they are used a lot in this book, are crocheted rather than knitted. I crochet more than I knit so, apart from being fiddly and weird, it didn’t phase me. However, I know a lot of great knitters who don’t crochet at all and so wouldn’t buy this book. There are a few designs included but they are pretty basic. It would have been nice to see a jumper which made use of all aspects i.e. edging, main stitch and tapered yoke stitches. The sizes are pretty small, too. 19″ for the hat and 16″ for the collar. Most books provide at least a couple of size variations. I found it a bit perverse, too, that the patterns are not shown as a stitch repeat but a large swatch to fill the same portion of each page. Often this means a ‘repeat and a bit’ is shown, which is odd. It could put you off trying some of them. E.g. one simple design of 12 stitches by 16 rows is shown as filling half a page which makes it more intimidating than it is. Finally, I would have liked to see the patterns in order of difficulty. There are some very achievable ones hidden in the pages but they are mixed in with virtuoso stitches.
Having said all that, the pictures are stunning and inspiring. I just wish the book was more user friendly.

This is not a pattern book, although it does have a few basic patterns at the back. Its mainly a stitch dictionary of japanese pattern repeats. These seem to exemplify very fine textured designs with a mix of lace, small cables and crossed stitches, and small bobbles. If you like your knits textured, and want something for a fine gauge luxury knit or for a light summer top, then these are perfect. You do need to be comfortable using charts, this isnt a book for beginners, or those starting to improve. However, if you are at the stage of pushing your boundaries beyond the basics, and are confident enough to swop out one pattern repeat for another, then this is a great addition to any library. Whilst the full patterns are simple, there are a lot of free or very cheap pdf patterns of japanese knits online if you want a different style of jumper etc, but want something similar to be able to envisage the end result fairly easily. Etsy or Pinterest are the best for this sort of thing. Really happy with the book, now off to decide which ine ti use in my next project…

A beautiful book of patterns. I have waited a long time for this book. Son ordered for my birthday but it never came in stock so bought the Kindle copy but this is better looked at in the paper version. So many exquisite patterns to do they are works of art. Need to get current projects finished first then I can use these to design a unique item. Not a book for a beginner to lace knitting ss they are very intricate patterns but all the symbols are explained so charts can be followed easily. Would recommend this book to knitters who enjoy a challenge.

Loved this book. Shall try to decipher the stitches on chart. May have to rewrite them with our knitting symbols.
